Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Asaka Jr..
Hi Christopher, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started rapping in 2016. I wrote my first raps with a few of my friends from high school. As I went on to college, I began experimenting different sounds, blending genres any chance I could. It was then I recorded my first song. I fell in love with the idea of being an artist right then and there.
As time progressed, the difficulty of maintaining my artistry began to reveal itself, as a few years after I began my career, I became homeless. Sleeping on the streets put a different element into my pen. I began to lash out and speak freely, but then it turned into something powerful. I battle those hardships and eventually fought my way back from survival once I was able to rap on Sway in the morning, even receiving his approval personally. From that moment forward, I’ve been working nonstop and have achieved some hefty accolades for an independent artist, such as opening for over 20 major artists, performing at 2 piston games, being featured on “On The Radar” and many more.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One thing I struggled with was homelessness and depression. I had to sleep outside and create different paths in order to come back from it. I struggled with that for a long time even after providing shelter for myself. I also lost two very close friends at the time.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m an independent hip hop artist from Detroit! I specialize in genre bending raps and storytelling. I also have range to tap into other genres such as r&b, dancehall, pop, etc.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Risk taking is simply apart of the journey to greatness. One of the biggest risks I took was quitting a job to begin my career full time. I had to force myself to provide with just my music. It was a very difficult road, but it changed my perspective on my art; this was never a hobby, it’s a lifestyle. Risk taking brings out your true nature when under pressure. It’s sometimes is the deciding factor in whether or not you should be pursuing whatever you’re taking that risk for.
