Conversations with Christi Dreese

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christi Dreese.

Hi Christi, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve been immersed in the arts for as long as I can remember. From childhood through high school, I took every art program available, always knowing deep down that I was meant to be an artist. At Aquinas College, I majored in painting and earned my Bachelor of Arts with a dual major in business—two fields that would later become the foundation of my career.

After graduating, I entered the framing industry to pair that skill with my artwork, creating two complementary income streams. Over the years, I opened and operated a retail gallery and custom framing business, which allowed me to serve customers while continuing to grow as an artist.

About ten years ago, when my kids were busy with school activities and sports, I chose to move my business home. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Working from my home studio gave me the flexibility I needed and opened the door to a more personal, mobile way of serving clients. Today, I meet customers right in their homes or businesses with artwork, custom frame samples, and creative solutions for whatever project they need.

Along the way, I learned the sublimation printing process, which allowed me to make my artwork accessible and affordable to more people. Now I print my designs on a range of products—from home goods to fine art prints, notecards, and more. My collections can be found in retail gift shops, museum stores, and each summer at the Muskegon Farmers Market.

In addition to studio work, I’ve also created murals for the community—large-scale pieces that reflect the spirit of local spaces and allow me to share art in a way that brings people together.

I work closely with interior designers and art consultants to bring warmth, color, and joy into homes and healthcare environments. Many of my giclée’s and original oil paintings are installed throughout Corewell Health Hospitals, creating uplifting spaces for patients, families, and staff.

For over 25 years, I’ve been building a business rooted in creativity, community, and the belief that art has the power to brighten the world. Nothing brings me more happiness than knowing my work puts a smile on someone’s face and brings a little warmth into their day.

Creating art for a brighter world—that’s always been my mission.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. I’ve had my share of trial and error, and this business has taught me the importance of staying flexible and determined. The early years were full of learning moments—some tough, some inspiring—but all of them invaluable. Over time, I’ve learned what works, what doesn’t, and the importance of evolving with the times. Growth comes from being willing to adapt, try new things, and keep moving forward.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I grew up near the lake, and it’s always been my greatest source of inspiration. I’m best known for my impressionistic oil paintings of the beach, Lake Michigan, and the vibrant colors of autumn. My process begins with a blank black canvas—an unconventional choice, but one that has become part of my signature style. I sketch a loose outline in chalk, then begin blocking in color using the small, square brushstrokes many people immediately recognize as mine.

The black canvas brings a luminous energy to my work, letting the bright colors pop while I intentionally leave bits of black peeking through. That combination—black foundation, bold color, and square dabs of paint—is what sets my art apart.

My two daughters are my greatest creations, and I’m incredibly proud of the paths they’re on. One plays softball for Central Michigan and is studying business, while my oldest is a senior at Hope College pursuing a future in the medical field.

Of all the projects I’ve worked on, creating the Spring Lake Community Mural has been one of the most meaningful experiences. And there’s nothing quite like hearing someone say they love seeing my work in a medical facility. Both moments are equally rewarding because they remind me why I do this—art has the power to brighten people’s lives, and that will always be my greatest purpose.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Time at the lake with loved ones, the joy of painting, and knowing my art makes a difference—that’s what truly makes me happy.
