Conversations with Brittany Pierce

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Pierce.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started Canvas + Clay at the beginning of the pandemic in 2021. I was in desperate need of a creative outlet and a way to stay busy while stuck at home. I first learned to sew and starting selling canvas pennants. Later, I added bracelets to my shop. In November 2021, I expended to drinkware for the holidays and that quickly became my bestseller. That is now my favorite item to make (and to photograph)!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I couldn’t imagine starting my business without the security of also having a full-time job. It can be extremely stressful when you have amazing sales one month and barely any the next. It is hard to understand all the analytics that go into selling items online, and social media marketing does not come naturally to me.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
The goal when I started Canvas + Clay was to create items that would bring people joy in their daily life. I wanted people to believe that they were amazing and worthy of beautiful things. Specifically, beautiful things that didn’t need to be extravagant or expensive. Whether that be a custom bracelet or a canvas pennant with an inspirational quote – I wanted them to feel good having my items in their lives. And there is just something about a new tumbler that makes the thought of staying hydrated just a little more appealing!

What’s next?
I am doing my first vendor market this summer and I am equally excited and nervous for that. There is a certain level of comfort that comes from operating a business totally online. Selling my items in person will be a big change for me, and something not in my comfort zone. But it’s one step closer to my dream of owning my own boutique!
