Conversations with Bree Wood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bree Wood.

Hi Bree, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started my photography business in 2018 while attending the University of Central Oklahoma, where I was pursuing degrees in Forensic Science and Psychology. What began as a creative outlet quickly grew into something much bigger. I fell in love with documenting people, their relationships, and the moments that matter most. Before long, I found myself photographing engagements, families, and eventually weddings across Oklahoma, Colorado, and beyond.

After graduating in 2022, I made the decision to pursue photography full-time. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to photograph weddings throughout the United States and internationally, including destinations such as Italy, Mexico, Scotland, and the Dominican Republic. My work has also been featured in publications such as Rocky Mountain Bride, Southern Bride, Wedding Chicks, and Loverly.

While I’m incredibly grateful for those milestones, the heart of my business has always been the people I serve. I love getting to know my couples, hearing their stories, and documenting their wedding day in a way that feels genuine to them.

Over the years, my business has evolved, but my approach has remained the same: creating an experience where clients feel comfortable, cared for, and fully present in the moments that matter most. It’s been an incredible journey so far, and I feel fortunate that so many couples have trusted me to tell their stories.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like most business owners, my journey hasn’t been a completely smooth road. When I started my business in college, I was balancing classes, exams, and building a client base at the same time. There were many late nights spent editing after studying and early mornings spent answering emails before class.

As my business grew, I faced a different set of challenges. Learning how to run a successful business is very different from learning photography itself. Things like pricing, contracts, marketing, bookkeeping, and client communication were all skills I had to develop over time through experience and plenty of trial and error.

One of the most difficult seasons of my life came when my mom was diagnosed with cancer and later passed away. Navigating grief while continuing to serve clients was incredibly challenging, but it also changed the way I view photography. It reinforced just how important photographs become over time. The images we create often outlive the moments themselves, and they become part of a family’s history. That perspective has given even greater meaning to the work I do.

More recently, like many small business owners, I’ve experienced the ups and downs that come with an ever-changing economy and industry. There are seasons where bookings come easily and seasons where you have to adapt, learn, and push forward despite uncertainty. Those challenges have taught me resilience, flexibility, and the importance of continually evolving while staying true to the experience I want to provide my clients.

Looking back, I wouldn’t change any of those obstacles. They’ve shaped both the business owner and person I am today, and they’ve helped me better serve the couples and families who trust me to document some of the most important moments of their lives.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a destination wedding photographer based in Oklahoma, serving couples throughout the United States and internationally. While weddings are the heart of my business, I also photograph engagements, maternity, newborns, and families. My goal is to document life’s biggest milestones in a way that feels genuine, timeless, and true to the people in front of my camera.

I specialize in wedding photography for couples who value connection, experience, and meaningful moments over perfectly staged images. My work blends candid storytelling with gentle direction, allowing couples to feel comfortable and present while still receiving beautiful, polished photographs. I am known for vibrant, true-to-life colors, emotional imagery, and creating an experience that feels relaxed rather than forced.

What I’m most proud of isn’t a specific award or publication—it’s the relationships I’ve built with my clients. Many of my wedding couples come back years later for maternity, newborn, and family sessions, and there’s something incredibly special about continuing to document their lives long after the wedding day is over. Being trusted with those milestones is something I never take for granted.

I think what sets me apart is the level of care I bring to each client experience. I don’t see myself as someone who simply shows up with a camera. I help couples build timelines, navigate the planning process, feel comfortable in front of the camera, and fully enjoy their wedding day. At the end of it all, I want my clients to feel like they gained a friend who genuinely cared about their experience, not just a photographer they hired for a service.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
The best way to work with me is by reaching out through my website, social media, or inquiry form if you’re planning a wedding, engagement session, or portrait session. I work with clients both locally and for destination celebrations, and I love helping couples create an experience that feels authentic to them.

I’m also always excited to connect with fellow creatives and wedding professionals. Some of my favorite opportunities have come through collaborating with planners, florists, venues, videographers, and other small business owners who are passionate about serving their clients well.

If you’ve worked with me in the past, one of the greatest ways to support my business is through referrals. So much of my business has been built through word-of-mouth recommendations from past clients and vendor friends, and I am incredibly grateful for that support.

Whether you’re looking for a photographer, interested in collaborating on a project, or simply want to follow along with my work, I’d love to connect. You can find me online at BreeSmithPhotography.com and on Instagram at @breesmithphotography.
