Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?

About 40 years ago, I embarked on a magical journey, pivoting from the realm of social work to the creative world of cosmetology. Growing up as the youngest of 10 children, my mother, a woman of many talents, greatly influenced this decision. Among the myriad hats she wore, hair artistry was one that sparkled with creativity and charm, and I graciously accepted it as part of my heritage.

Becoming the owner of Capellini Salon in Okemos, Michigan, was like stepping into a dreamland where my aspirations blossomed into reality. I often joke that I earned a PhD in my profession, as every day I am motivated by my craft and deeply committed to my team. One of the many joys of ownership is the role of team leadership, where I surround myself with talented artists who share a desire to grow and create a positive vibe in our salon environment.

The greatest joy and passion I derive from my work is making all our guests feel absolutely radiant about their hair design and health. I pride myself on the communication skills that ensure each guest leaves with a design that makes them feel wonderful about themselves, ultimately leaving with a genuine smile. This daily motivation fuels my spirit and makes every day in this beautiful life we live an enchanting adventure.

If it were not for my soulmate of 20 years, the transition to our salon home would not have been possible. In my spare time, I love to spend time with family, indulge in interior design, and enjoy a wide-open fairway. My mantra, “I am able,” reflects my belief in the power of positivity and perseverance. I am privileged to provide a salon for a community that grants smiles every day.

As I reflect on my journey, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences, the people, and the magic that has shaped my career. Every day at Capellini Salon is a new adventure, filled with creativity, joy, and the opportunity to make a positive impact on our guests’ lives. I am proud to be part of a community that values artistry, growth, and genuine smiles.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?

As a hair artist, my career has been shaped by unique challenges.

When COVID-19 struck, masks covered our faces, making it hard to see smiles. I learned to communicate warmth through my eyes and words, ensuring my guests felt cared for. The financial hardships taught me resilience and adaptability.

Listening to my guests’ life stories has been another challenge. Their struggles can be heavy, and while I wish I could do more, being a good listener is powerful. Providing a safe space for them to share their stories has enriched my role and strengthened our connections.

Through these experiences, I have grown both professionally and personally. My journey has taught me the value of resilience, empathy, and the power of listening, transforming obstacles into opportunities for growth.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?

In my career, I am most proud of the diverse hair artist that I am. I love all aspects of hair design, and I believe this sets me apart from others who specialize in certain areas. My 40 years of experience also distinguish me, along with my strong listening skills. Life can bring challenges, but I have found that when you change the way you look at a challenge, the challenge itself changes.
