Conversations with Ali Haidar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ali Haidar

Hi Ali, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Remission Detroit was founded as a response to a growing crisis: far too many cancer patients in Michigan were struggling to afford treatment. What began as a small initiative at the University of Michigan quickly grew into a nonprofit dedicated to advocating for cancer patients, expanding research, and fostering a strong community of support.

Since our founding in 2023, we’ve expanded our efforts across Michigan, establishing student-led chapters at multiple universities to increase our impact. We’ve also worked with hospitals, community organizations, and advocacy groups to ensure that every patient gets the care they deserve.

At our core, we believe that no one should have to choose between their health and financial stability. That belief continues to drive our work today as we grow and build a future free of cancer.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, but that’s what makes our journey meaningful. Like any grassroots organization, we faced our fair share of challenges. One of the biggest hurdles was expanding our reach while staying true to our mission. Growing from a student-led initiative to a multi-chapter organization required careful planning and the right people. We had to figure out how to balance advocacy, fundraising, and building a strong community sustainably.

Despite the struggles, our motivation has always come from the patients and families we serve. Every fundraiser, every donation, and every story of someone getting the care they need reminds us why we do this. The road hasn’t been easy, but it has been worth every step.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My work focuses on expanding access to healthcare, education, and housing for underserved communities. I take pride in bridging the gap between institutions and the people they serve, blending advocacy with hands-on service to create meaningful change. Driven by the belief that no one should be denied opportunities due to financial or systemic barriers, I remain committed to empowering individuals and transforming communities.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
What makes me happy is seeing the direct impact of my work, whether it’s supporting cancer patients, helping students find mentorship and direction, or helping families secure stable housing. Knowing that I’ve made someone’s life a little easier drives my passion for advocacy and service.

I find happiness in building meaningful connections, whether through mentorship, community engagement, or collaborating with others who share the goal of creating positive change. Seeing young people I’ve mentored step into leadership roles or witnessing a community rally around a cause reassures me that our work has a lasting impact. Ultimately, I’m happiest knowing that my work aligns with my values and that every effort, no matter how small, contributes to a greater movement for equity and justice.
