Conversations with Afa Dworkin

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Afa Dworkin.

Afa Dworkin

Hi Afa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born in Moscow, Russia, into a wonderful family of non-musicians who always gave me unconditional love, care, and every resource to pursue my dreams. I grew up in Azerbaijan, surrounded by family and immersed in the arts.

Music was an integral part of my life from the very beginning. When my family came to the United States in the mid-90s due to some political shifts in the country and work opportunities for my father, I experienced some challenges in adapting to a new country and culture, as well as the language. Yet, this transition also opened doors to new opportunities. At the University of Michigan, I studied violin intensively and became involved in various pursuits.

One particular encounter with my then-classmate Aaron Dworkin (also the Founder of Sphinx) proved poignantly significant. It introduced me to the idea of Sphinx, a close friend and, eventually, a life partner. I became involved in the early days of Sphinx as its first intern. I am here almost 30 years later as its President and Artistic Director.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My journey has been mostly joyous and rewarding. As with any leader, I have had my share of learning moments and will continue to grow and better myself (hopefully). However, at this moment, and this element has been constant, there is a challenge in securing a sustainable future for Sphinx.

I work daily on identifying the resources and funding that make our work for thousands of artists possible. Luckily, I collaborate with an excellent team, and we find ways to advocate for our mission and serve our community. The Sphinx Organization’s mission to transform lives through the power of the arts continues to resonate deeply with me.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. What can you tell our readers who might not be as familiar with your work?
My biggest source of inspiration is my family. I have two sons, Noah and Amani, who are wonderful humans. They remind me of my core, which is a belief in love, empathy, and human connection. My life partner, Aaron, is the dreamer in our family.

But his creativity is unlike any I have encountered. His visions come to reality by the sheer force of his ability to envision each concept from start to finish and his talent for seeing how an idea can materialize itself for the greater good of humanity. I have been and continue to be inspired by him, and it has been a joy to create alongside him. What am I known for? That is tough…you would have to ask those who know and love me. Probably my passion for the culinary arts and my commitment to the mission of Sphinx.

I love what I do on a daily basis because our work serves those I deeply care about, our community, to artists, teachers, and creatives who shape the sound and fabric of classical music. The work of Sphinx challenges me every day but also compels me to work harder. My passion for food comes from my love of celebrating those I love.

I enjoy cooking and eating with my family and friends, as I find everything about food to be a ritual of love and connection.

We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Can you share something that might surprise us?
I did not learn how to swim until well into my adulthood… I always loved water and never got around to learning until my children. A favorite family activity became fun in waterparks and it became important for me to connect with my boys on that level, so I took lessons in my thirties.
