Community Highlights: Meet Venus Works of Counseling Works, PLLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Venus Works.

Hi Venus, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Founder and Lead Therapist Venus L. Works, MA, LPC, is a native Detroiter whose clinical journey began with a deep commitment to the city’s youth. After earning her Master’s degree in School and Community Counseling from Wayne State University, Venus spent years serving as the Director of College & Career Development for University Prep Schools in Detroit. In this role, she directly managed academic, personal, and character development programs across seven K-12 schools.

While guiding hundreds of high-achieving students and families through intense academic and performance pressures, Venus discovered a critical limitation. School guidance could only support a child so far—the true root causes of youth anxiety, performance pressure, and emotional distress were deeply tied to the complex dynamics, transitions, and stressors within the home ecosystem.

Driven to bridge this gap, Venus founded Counseling Works, PLLC in 2017. Armed with Executive Leadership Training, Small Business Development Training, and her background as a Certified Clinical Counseling Supervisor, she designed a boutique practice that looks at the family holistically.

Over the past nine years, the practice has grown into a hand-selected, specialized collective of talented Black women clinicians. Today, we focus intentionally on The Modern Family Dynamics—providing deeply professional, culturally aligned care tailored specifically to high-achieving women, high-performing children, and blended family structures.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Some of my challenges have included new and existing client’s ability maintain healthcare to cover mental health services. We strive to ensure we help alleviate this burden by providing a variety of health insurance plan options, including many Medicaid plans. Also, we strive to create affordable options via income-based payment options.

We’ve also had some challenges with ensuring enough women, children and couples are aware of our services. We’re working diligently to increase our marketing and outreach to increase our exposure to those in need of our care.
