Community Highlights: Meet TJ Tyus of Tyus Training Institute

Today we’d like to introduce you to TJ Tyus

Hi TJ, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started speaking in 2007 after I was accused of murder and lost my CFL contract. I started traveling with Eric Thomas and speaking around the country. in High Schools, Youth detention centers and prisons. Eric and I then eventually became Senior and Executive Pastors of a church called A Place of Change Ministry. I moved from Lansing, MI to Kalamazoo, MI in 2010 and my wife was diagnosed with Arnold Chiari Malformation and had brain surgery within 4 weeks of being diagnosed at Borgess Brain and Spine Institute. We eventually moved to Portage, MI to raise our three boys, Anthony Tyus III, XaVior Tyus, and Vaughnzell Tyus. All three boys went on to play football for Portage Northern High School and became All State and earned football scholarships to play in college. I started running Speed and Agility camps around Portage, MI for youth ages 6-18yrs old. During COVID I built a weight room at my house and started training my boys after local gyms shut down and eventually other parents saw my boys success and asked me to train their children and that’s how I became a personal trainer in the community of Portage. I have trained over 1,000 youth in the Portage area rather through Speed and Agility camps or personal training. I have over 10 student athletes playing college sports who I personally trained 1on1 in High School and or middle school.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it has not been a smooth road. COVID was very challenging to keep my training business afloat and my speaking business pivoted to virtual speaking and less in person speaking.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Tyus Training Institute ?
I am a consultant for Middle Schools, High Schools, Universities, and professional teams. I have worked with Ohio State University football program and cheer leading program. I have worked with Clemson Football, Northern Illinois, Florida Gators, Los Angeles Rams, and Minnesota Vikings, to name a few. I am also a consultant for Seelye Ford Motor Company and Kalamazoo Flower Group who I have worked with for over 6 yrs.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I do not believe in luck. God has blessed me during the good times and difficult times. I have learned and grown from the pain and learned how to capitalize on the success, because success leaves clues.
