Today we’d like to introduce you to Tatenda Mkuruva.
Hi Tatenda, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My soccer journey started at a very young age. My dad played the game, so soccer has always been part of my DNA, it was in our home, our conversations, and our daily life.
I was born and raised in Harare, Zimbabwe, where I played throughout elementary school, middle school, and high school. As I developed, I had the honor of representing the Zimbabwe national football team U15, U17, U23, and eventually the senior national team. I earned over 20 international caps with the senior team, an experience that shaped me both as a player and a person.
I signed my first professional contract while still in high school and went on to play professionally in several countries. My career included time with Dynamos FC in Zimbabwe, Cape Town City FC in South Africa, and Buildcon FC in Zambia.
In 2019, I moved to the United States and continued my professional career with Michigan Stars FC and Detroit City FC.
In 2021, I began coaching young players, simply wanting to give back to the game and help kids learn the right way. As more families trusted me with their children’s development, my spouse encouraged me to turn my coaching into a business. With her support, we built a training program that continued to grow and eventually opened our own soccer training facility for youth athletes in Shelby Township.
Today, my mission is to use everything soccer has given me, the lessons, the discipline, and the experience at the highest levels, to help develop the next generation both on and off the field.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Has it been a smooth road? Not at all, like any business or career, there have definitely been challenges along the way.
As a professional player, I faced challenges such as moving between countries, adapting to different cultures, dealing with Michigan’s cold weather (lol), and being away from family members. Each of these pushed me to grow both personally and professionally.
Starting a business brought a whole new set of struggles. Building trust with families, growing the program from just a few players, managing schedules, and handling finances, though thankfully my spouse is in the accounting field, required a lot of effort. There are countless responsibilities behind the scenes, and staying true to the quality of training took immense patience and hard work.
But every challenge taught me something. They shaped my perspective, strengthened my resilience, and ultimately made both my career and business journey more meaningful.
As you know, we’re big fans of TM Soccer Action LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
TM Soccer Action is a soccer training organization dedicated to developing athletes at every level. We offer private and small-group 1-on-1 training for both goalkeepers and field players, focusing on technical and tactical development to help athletes reach their full potential.
We’re especially known for elite goalkeeper development and highly detailed technical training for field players. What sets us apart is our focus on quality over quantity, keeping group sizes small, creating structured and progressive training plans, and emphasizing discipline, work ethic, and mindset as much as skill.
What I’m most proud of is the growth we see in our athletes. Many of them go on to represent Michigan in the Olympic Development Program (ODP). Our brand is built on hard work, professionalism, and genuine care for every athlete we train.
Most importantly, we are more than just training. TM Soccer Action is a development environment where players are challenged, supported, and pushed to reach their full potential, both on and off the field.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Luck may open a door, but hard work is what keeps it open. I see luck as preparation meeting opportunity, it may play a part, but it’s never the driving factor.
In both life and business, there have been moments where timing or circumstance gave me an advantage, but what truly matters is how you respond. We focus on controlling what we can: delivering high-quality training, building real relationships with families, and creating an environment where players truly develop.
So while luck may play a role, it’s commitment, discipline, and genuine care for our athletes that drive our success. Every achievement is the result of consistent effort, focus, and a dedication to helping our players grow, not just as athletes, but as people.
