Today we’d like to introduce you to Shay Dockery.
Hi Shay, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey began with a lot of challenges. Growing up, I experienced homelessness, instability, and trauma within an abusive home environment. As a young person searching for acceptance and belonging, I found myself surrounded by influences that led me down paths that were not healthy or productive. Those experiences exposed me to many of the realities that young people face when they lack safe spaces, support systems, and positive opportunities.
Everything began to change when I found faith and purpose. Through my relationship with God, I was able to heal, grow, and develop a new vision for my life. Instead of allowing my past to define me, I decided to use my experiences to create something meaningful for others.
That vision became The Museum DETROIT. I founded the organization to provide safe, creative, and empowering spaces for youth and communities. My goal is to ensure that young people especially those facing adversity, poverty, homelessness, trauma, or difficult circumstances have access to mentorship, arts and culture programs, workforce development opportunities, and positive environments where they can discover their talents and build confidence.
Today, my work is focused on creating pathways for the next generation. Through community partnerships, educational programming, and creative initiatives, I strive to help young people see possibilities for their future that they may not otherwise have access to. My story is proof that our circumstances do not have to determine our destination, and I am committed to helping others realize that same potential in their own lives.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it has not been a smooth road. Building The Museum DETROIT has come with many challenges, including overcoming my own past experiences with homelessness, trauma, and limited resources. Securing funding, building community partnerships, and turning a vision into a sustainable organization required persistence and faith. There were times when obstacles seemed overwhelming, but each challenge strengthened my commitment to creating opportunities and safe spaces for youth who may be facing similar struggles.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The Museum DETROIT was created from my belief that every young person deserves a safe place to learn, create, and feel supported. After overcoming homelessness, trauma, and difficult life experiences, I wanted to build the kind of space I wish I had growing up.
Today, The Museum DETROIT works at the intersection of arts, culture, youth development, and workforce training. We connect young people and families with creative opportunities, educational programs, mentorship, community resources, and pathways to personal and professional growth.
What sets us apart is that our work is community-centered and informed by real-life experiences. We understand the challenges many young people face because we’ve lived them. Rather than focusing on one issue, we take a holistic approach that helps individuals build confidence, develop skills, explore their creativity, and access opportunities that can change the course of their lives.
What I’m most proud of is that The Museum DETROIT has grown from a personal vision into a platform for community impact. Our brand is built on resilience, creativity, and empowerment. We want people to know that we’re not just creating programs we’re creating opportunities, building partnerships, and helping people see possibilities for themselves that they may not have seen before.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
The quality that has been most important to my success is resilience. I’ve faced homelessness, trauma, setbacks, and many obstacles throughout my life, but I refused to let those experiences define my future. Instead, I used them as motivation to keep moving forward. Resilience has allowed me to stay focused on my purpose, adapt to challenges, and continue building The Museum DETROIT even when the path wasn’t easy. My faith, determination, and commitment to serving others have helped me turn difficult experiences into opportunities to create positive change in my community.
