Community Highlights: Meet Shawntinique Shepherd of Nique The CFO

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawntinique Shepherd.

Hi Shawntinique, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
My name is Shawntinique Shepherd I am a 27 year old single mother from Detroit, MI. I started off doing taxes back in 2013. In late 2018, I wanted to actually use my skills and start my own virtual tax business. After the second tax season, I realized I didn’t want to just be a tax office and decided to get my Bachelors Degrees in Accounting & Business Development, to use. I then added business formation and other accounting services. When I started, my clients were just in Michigan and then each year we expanded further and further across the United States. Now in 2022, we now have clients in 14 states and counting.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road at all. I was married for 6 years and I am recently divorced with four children that I take care of on my own. I really lacked self-confidence and self-love for a very long time. I thought about giving up on my business last year during our separation period but God wouldn’t let me. We were facing eviction; I didn’t have a solid support system with my children and It was very hard. Trying to run a business, take care of home and children, never getting a break it was just too much. Focusing was definitely my biggest challenge at that time because this was something new to me.

We’ve been impressed with Nique The CFO, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
When I first got into business, I started a firm named Wiggins & Associates after the divorce, I decided to self-brand myself as Nique The CFO… A CFO is Chief Financial Officer, my job is to help your business grow. I help with keeping the financial records of your business, analyze your financial reports, budget, create a business plan, make sure your business is IRS compliant, track KPIs and many other things. I am your financial bestie at the end of the day. I create everlasting bonds with my clients and make sure that they are comfortable with me and not intimidated by what I do.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan on the Eastside. I love the food of the city, I love the fact it has the best high school ever, Cass Tech. I love the fact that we can all crack jokes and keep it pushing. The things I do not like about the city is the crime and how we don’t always stick together especially us business owners. It’s like a popularity contest instead of all us working together to better the city.
