Community Highlights: Meet Rachel Erin of Stillwater Stables & Stays

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Erin.

Hi Rachel, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
We started this project in May 2020 during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic with a simple goal: to create an affordable place where people could enjoy the outdoors, connect with horses, and experience the peace and beauty of nature. Our vision was “A Private Perch in an Enchanted Forest”—a place to slow down, unplug, and recharge.

My love for the outdoors began growing up sailing the Great Lakes and exploring the forests of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. I was introduced to horses in third grade when I mucked stalls at a local barn in exchange for riding a little buckskin horse named Molly. That experience sparked a lifelong passion for horses and the equestrian lifestyle.

My partner, Scott, grew up in Iowa and the farming communities of Illinois, where he developed a strong appreciation for rural life and the land. Together, we’ve combined our backgrounds and interests to create a welcoming space where guests can enjoy nature, spend time with horses, and make lasting memories.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Well, COVID for starters! We purchased the land in May of 2020, everything from funding to sourcing materials was a challenge. The land was settled in 1832, and not much was changed since. The original log cabin, which is now our home, was all that we started with. The cabins, event spaces, trails, stables and paddocks all needed to be carefully carved out.

We’ve been impressed with Stillwater Stables & Stays, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
You might say I’m known for making something out of nothing. From my early days with horses—earning my first horse show ribbon on a horse everyone else had forgotten about—to creating Stillwater Stables & Stays from a rugged, woolly piece of hunting property, I’ve always loved the creative process of creating something new.

Today, that once-overlooked property welcomes guests from near and far for celebrations and getaways of every shape and size. Whether it’s a romantic couples’ retreat, a girlfriends’ weekend, a wellness retreat, a wedding, or a family gathering, there’s nothing more rewarding than seeing people make meaningful memories here.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Come see for yourself and book a stay! We are open all year (yes! even your private hot tub).
