Community Highlights: Meet Morgan Brown of Morgan Jean Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Brown.

Hi Morgan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I picked up a DSLR camera in high school. I had always loved taking photos with my little point and shoot, but this nice, big, new camera just felt right in my hand. I photographed friends for fun and loved capturing the memories.

I knew that photography would always stay in my life. There was one day my senior year of high school when I went out during my free period and took photos of one friend in particular who was unable to afford senior photos from a professional. We had fun, made memories, and the happiness on his face filled me with joy and confidence.

My passion grew every day as I took more and more photographs throughout that year and over the summer. I had an inkling photography was more than just a hobby and after spending just two weeks studying music in college, I officially changed my major to Photography.

As I learn new skills, take on new sessions, and gain new experiences, that same joy and confidence that I felt so many years ago continues to resonate in me and provides me with passion, motivation, laughter, and optimism. I am continuously looking for more opportunities to expand my love for my work and for this world while bringing joy to those who I have the privilege to work with and photograph.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely not been smooth.

From professors that gave me a hard time about how I take and edit my photos to people in my life not believing in my ability to provide clients with quality work, I’ve had to overcome a few obstacles.

I’ve dealt with other photographers telling me that I need to run my business differently or change how I do different things, equipment failing midsession, and user error while shooting that I don’t realize happened until I get home to edit photos.

Covid-19 was definitely a huge pause on progress as well. I believe in community over self and wanted to make sure that I was doing my part to help keep myself and those around me safe. When we started being able to have sessions and weddings again, I had multiple exposures despite being as cautious as possible, and that can be very scary.

There’s also been quite a bit of imposter syndrome happening for sure. While my business continues to grow and I work on my skills, I don’t know that I’ll ever feel good enough. I think that is something that a lot of people deal with, and we should talk about more.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I am a professional photographer and have been for a little over 6 years now. I mainly love working with people, but in all honesty, just want to do work that makes others happy. My work is truly fulfilling due to the fact that I have to opportunity to create joy in others through the photos that I take.

I take pride in my work and want to make sure that my clients get everything they asked for and more. I don’t like to pigeonhole myself into any particular style of editing, but I am more looking to capture the day. Each session has its own story and emotions and I truly want that represented. Clients should be able to look through the photos and relive the time, get nostalgic, and feel confident.

I’m most proud of things that aren’t “public” in a sense. I’m proud of the thank yous, the messages or gratitude, and the soul-filling happiness I see from my clients. I love seeing my photos actually being used and people being proud to show them off.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love the size and energy. GR isn’t big enough that you get lost at every turn, but it big enough that you have options and experiences.

The worst part – traffic and parking. I love having the opportunity to being in the city, but I wish it was a bit easier to get there.
