Community Highlights: Meet Michael Egnash of Egnash Auction

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Egnash.

Michael Egnash

Hi Michael, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Egnash Auction is a second-generation business that started with my mother and father, Ray and Marie Egnash, doing on-site estate auctions and weekly live auctions. In the last 25 years my Wife, Tamara, and I have transitioned the business into a full-blown estate liquidation company. We no longer do on-site commission-based auctions but rather purchase anything and everything outright. Prior to Covid, we held twice weekly live auctions at our large facility in Howell. When Covid hit, we were forced to change how we do business as this is how we make our living. We now do twice weekly live Facebook auctions on our Egnash Auction Facebook page. We market our auctions as “fast, fun, affordable “ entertainment and try to provide that in a fun Family atmosphere.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not been a smooth road. It is a labor of love type of business. The hours are long, the sacrifices are many, and the labor involved is never-ending. Most times the merchandise that is sold through the secondary market, such as ours comes with a sad sometimes tragic story. Dealing with the emotions involved, besides logistics, is probably the hardest part of the liquidation business.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I like to say that we are “The best-kept secret in Livingston County.“ Our loyal Customer base is made up of resellers, dealers, collectors, end users, and many others. Since we are strictly a liquidation company our bidders enjoy the fact that we have no consignments, we have no buyers’ premiums, we have no reserve prices. We do not deal in any particular field of interest, which means our auction always contain a vast majority of items. We do not pick or sort, we strictly liquidate, therefore at any given auction you may find anything from museum pieces to the smallest knickknack and everything in between. It’s an awesome way to bid your price on high-end furniture, glassware, antiques, collectibles, occasional vehicles, great artwork, jewelry, vintage items, and the list goes on and on!!! Customers bid in real time on our live Facebook auctions and pay when the pick their items up at our facility in Howell. No credit card information is ever required. We have Customers Nationwide as well as a wonderful Customer in Ireland that we ship small packages to with only actual shipping costs, no handling fees or never any extra charges. Our in-state Customers “build a pile” by winning bids in our weekly auctions and come monthly to pay and pickup. Many people just watch as buying something is certainly not required just for the entertainment as you never know what may show up or what crazy thing may happen!!!

We’d love to hear about what you think about risk-taking.
As co-owner of this business with my beautiful Wife and partner Tamara, I can tell you it’s like playing high-stakes poker every day. We purchase outright and are well known for our honesty and fairness. I base my offer on my extensive knowledge of true market value. We take all the risk. Labor moving and hauling expenses are on us. That’s way the service of buying outright works so much better for most. They know exactly how much money they are receiving opposed to them taking the gamble on receiving what’s left after expenses and commissions.
