Today we’d like to introduce you to Meeja Kinsey.
Meeja, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am an athletic trainer, registered yoga teacher, and fitness coach. I specialize in female physiology and focus on prescribing holistic fitness programs aligned with the menstrual cycle. My education and background is working in athletics where I provided injury prevention and rehabilitation services as a healthcare practitioner for professional soccer teams along with other sports. I obtained a full-ride scholarship at the University of Delaware for my master’s degree, where my thesis studies investigated the effects of estrogen on ligament laxity and neurocognitive performance in young women. This is where my interest in the menstrual cycle and our ability to monitor physiological changes began. Later on, in the year of 2021, I was called to the scene of a man who suffered cardiac arrest in our building. He was unconscious and without a heartbeat when I arrived, so due to my educational background, I prompted a coworker to begin CPR while I applied and administered a shock from the AED to return his heart rhythm to normal. Thankfully, he was revived and transported to the hospital. As a result, I was deeply impacted on the importance of heart health and preventative measures. This led me to dive further into fitness coaching. I wanted to educate and influence women to use everything they had to their advantage to better their relationships with their bodies and health.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road for me. I have had to experience severe moments of stress, as well as trying to grow a new business. I found that education has been an important component of trying to get women to understand that our menstrual cycles can actually be used for our benefit. There are so many women that do not understand their bodies or their physiological processes that I have to challenge the traditional ways of thinking in order for them to improve their lives. I have personally been through mental health challenges and have been empowered with training aligned with my menstrual cycle.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
FemPhys LLC was created to educate, promote, and coach women about their physiology and how to use their menstrual cycles to their advantage. It is an abbreviated term for “female physiology.” I am humorously becoming known as the “period trainer” and wear that badge proudly. I want to break the stigma and taboo of what is normal and what is irregular when it comes to our menstrual cycles, as well as the fears of lifting heavy and eating more! It is also important for my business to be involved with period product poverty and helping young girls stay in sport. I truly believe this is what sets me apart from the flood of fitness coaches out there today.
As far as my services go, I love to help women who are like-minded and driven to improve their mental and physical health using holistic practices. My signature program includes a four-month-long program focused on training through various styles of exercise, practical nutrition applications, and all-inclusive education that uses the average duration of a menstrual cycle.
Any big plans?
My plans for the future are to further expand and use my consulting services to educate women across the country, as well as enlightening female athletes in various sports. Right now, I am looking to do a collaboration with a local philanthropy in Detroit that focuses on period product poverty.
