Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelvin Ateman Jr.
Hi Kelvin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I come from a hustling family—one built on hard work, sacrifice, faith, and finding new opportunities in this thing we call life. When I look back at where I come from, I realize that every person in my family played a role in showing me what it means to keep going, even when life doesn’t go according to plan.
My mother, Angela Ateman, who is gone but will never be forgotten, was one of the strongest examples of that. She wore many hats throughout her life, working as a team lead in plants and pursuing different careers, while eventually becoming a nurse. She served not only in the medical field but also as a nurse for the church I grew up in. She showed me what it meant to serve people, work hard, and continue growing. Even though she’s no longer physically here, her presence and the lessons she gave us continue to guide me every day.
My older sister, Najah Ateman, was the first person in our family to graduate from college. That was a major moment for us because she showed the rest of the family that there were doors we could walk through that maybe nobody before us had. She set a new standard and created another example of what was possible.
My father, Kelvin Ateman Sr., built his life around hard work as well. He went from driving trucks and doing what he had to do to provide for his family. There were sacrifices along the way—times when work and responsibility came before everything else. Growing up, those moments taught me that sometimes love doesn’t always look glamorous. Sometimes it looks like getting up early, going to work, and doing whatever you have to do to make sure your family has a chance.
Then there’s me—KJ, the kid who dreamed big and eventually did it. Football was my path. I worked my way through the game and eventually made it to the professional level, with the CFL being my last stop. It was an incredible experience, and I performed well, but eventually I was cut. For a long time, that was difficult to process because when you spend so much of your life chasing one dream, you can feel lost when that dream changes.
But that wasn’t the end of my story. I had to reinvent myself.
I went from working in a lawyer’s tax office, to working in a plant, to working at a bank, and eventually finding my way into the mental health field. Today, I’m a Team Behavioral Lead working with children. That work has given me a completely different perspective on purpose. I’m now in a position where I can help guide kids through difficult moments and hopefully show them that their circumstances don’t have to define their future.
At the same time, I’ve continued building my brand, Learned Lessons. What started as a vision has grown into something that allows me to collaborate with corporate companies and give back to the children I work with. One of the things I’m most proud of is being able to use the brand to help provide gifts and meaningful moments for kids who graduate from our program. That’s when I realized Learned Lessons is bigger than clothing or fashion—it’s about purpose, growth, and understanding that every chapter of your life teaches you something.
The truth is, though, before I got to this point, I was in a very dark space. When you’ve attended more funerals than birthday parties, it’s easy to lose yourself. Loss can change your perspective on life. You start wondering who’s next, why certain things happen, and whether you can continue carrying everything you’ve experienced.
But I’ve been blessed with angels—both here and gone—who have been strong enough to help me keep my sanity and continue moving forward. My family, my mother, the people I’ve lost, the people who believed in me, and the lessons I’ve learned through every setback have all helped shape the person I am today.
My story isn’t about having a perfect path. It’s about understanding that sometimes the dream you thought was your destination is really just preparing you for the purpose you were supposed to find later. I’ve been an athlete, an employee in different industries, a banker, a leader, a mentor, and an entrepreneur. Every version of me has taught the next version something.
That’s why my brand is called Learned Lessons.
Because at the end of the day, it’s not just about what happened to you. It’s about what you learned from it.
And I’m still learning.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road at all. If anything, life has gotten tougher the higher I climb. The hard part about success is realizing that some of the people you always imagined sharing these moments with are no longer here, or they’re unable to experience them with you because of the paths life took us down. I still have a few people I can celebrate these successful moments with, and I’m forever grateful for them. But nothing compares to sharing the fruits of your labor with the people who helped plant the seeds—those who sacrificed, struggled, believed in you, and helped shape you into who you are today. That’s probably the hardest lesson I’ve learned about success: sometimes you reach the moments you prayed for, only to wish the people you dreamed about celebrating with were still there beside you.

Learned Lessons is about looking at every experience in life—good or bad—as a lesson. I believe the pain, struggles, and tribulations we go through help shape us into who we become and prepare us for the success ahead.
What’s special to me is that my brand also helped lead me into a career working in the mental health field with youth. I’ve been able to positively impact kids and motivate both youth and staff to have a better outlook on life.
Learned Lessons is more than clothing—it’s a community. I don’t want to be seen as a celebrity or someone above others. What sets me apart is simply being human, accessible, and willing to help others grow. I want to build something original that lasts for generations, makes my family proud, and reminds people that no matter what they’re going through, we can learn, grow, and lean on each other.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
The only thing I want to say to the readers is that you don’t have to read my story, and my story may not mean much to some people until they see me standing next to certain celebrities. But to the people who already believed in me before any of that mattered, I want to say thank you. I appreciate you.
More than anything, I want people to remember to appreciate each other as human beings. Talk to somebody. Check on somebody. Understand that you are enough and you are worth more than you may realize.
