Community Highlights: Meet Jerry Berg of Swordsmanship Museum and Academy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jerry Berg.

Hi Jerry, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
What started as a passion to teach academic history using experiences rather than textbooks turned into exciting historical swordsmanship classes that blossomed into the Museum family we have today, specializing in swordsmanship classes, historical reenactments, and experiential history.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The hardest difficulty was making that jump from a life of salaries and benefits into the unknown world of running a swordsmanship and history studio. This is also something brand new, and there were very very few people who would be able to provide experience on how something like this would be done correctly.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Swordsmanship Museum and Academy?
Teaching Swordsmanship Classes, Leading Library Presentations, being a professor of Historical Swordsmanship at GVSU, and running interactive living history displays. Also running the Lumberjack and Logging Museum, the Fishing Museum and Cultural Center, and the Military History Academy.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
All of the instructors, educators, combatants, and event leads that provide the guidance and public face for our educational endeavors.
