Community Highlights: Meet Imani Elie of Detroit Travel Company/Detroit Travel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Imani Elie.

Hi Imani, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.

I’, an honorably-discharged Navy veteran, who served during Operation Enduring Freedom. It was during this time I acquired both nursing, EMT, radiology, and dental assisting education. I’ve obtained education from both Wayne State University in Detroit, MI and Hampton University in Hampton, VA. I recently graduated from the hospitality management program at Career Technical Institute,. I have beenin the hospitality and tourism industry for 5 years, & I’m currently continuing my education for the advancement of more entrepreneurial achievements.

In my free time, I loves spending time with my family & traveling around the world. I am the CEO of an exclusive travel concierge service that creates inclusive travel packages at a lower rate, globally. I am an extreme animal lover, and I also enjoy making music in my free time. I have 14 years of exceptional customer service experience, is a first-responder, FIRST AID/CPR certified, and holds several national hospitality certifications. I’m currently employed as an intern with the Michigan Democratic House of Representatives, working in Hospitality & Events.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?

The struggles along the way begin when I first went into business in 2020 with a family member.

I’ve been lucky to have been afforded the opportunities and the guest experiences that I’ve come across.

I’ve only had exceptional reviews and customers since opening in 2016. in 2022, I opened my own hospitality event space. It operates as a hospitality suite in which we provide à la carte services or inclusive packages.

However, I’d like to add that I’ve learned that everyone is not my target customer. And I must use discernment when deciding on approving or denying reservation request. Personally, and professionally, everyone isn’t a good fit.

There’s been financial challenges. Starting in 2017, I was without employment other than operating as the owner of an independent travel agency. I was using all my personal funds and savings to fund my business. This includes my website and the collection of inventories.

I’ve always focused on being a transparent person. A lot of individuals have support from family, associates, and friends. Sometimes there are situations like mine, in which it’s just me. Plus, hard work and dedication

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
