Community Highlights: Meet Hannah Rainy of Rainydarkfi

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Rainy

Hi Hannah , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Referring to the art world I got started in illustration. I used to draw couples chibi characters in middle school and sell them to my classmates until my school told me to stop. I also used to draw my schoolwork to the point that my teachers would call my parents because it would be on my homework and test. It’s all I would do in my free time.Haha

I also was super into Linkin Park at that time and so I fell in love with the rougher look with the graffiti and street art not to mention the whole video of “Breaking the habit” artwork in the Meteora album.

During this timeperiod I saw the Kanye West Graduation album artwork when I went to F.Y.E. I loved all the pop of the colors and seeing just how much you can do with one character. Or influence like the Gorillaz or Invader Zim were huge inspo.

Interestingly I got used to drawing characters even before I even knew what anime or animation was.

I attended a Vocational high school, which was a school mainly based on working with your hands and developing skills outside of your traditional high school experience I would say. This is where I started learning more about abstract art & fell in love with it immediately. I went out, got spray cans and Used any paint that I had in the house on a poster board. This goes into the birth of my Cheap Art collection.I earned my welding Diploma there after 3 years along with autobody and started welding in Metal sculptures and even fabricated dirt race cars for a bit.

Alongside my art persuits I started exploring and designing sites for fun with wix building a small clientele from local businesses to former NFL players. I always love designing my own style, & fell in love with the visual design. From creating the alignment of text, the transitions & animations that really shape your experiences when using anything from your phone to your TV to advertisement and commercials that really make things pop out. Every decade has its unique set of designs that make it stick out from the rest in some way. That became fascinating to me.

I already had a pretty full plate growing because of the religion that I was raised in. So I couldn’t really pursue my passions full on of art until I left and was excommunicated at 25.

I talk about this often in my art because that did have a huge impact on my lack of educational and career pursuits. It also fostered different sets of skills together over time.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As I mentioned earlier I grew up in a very strict, religious culture, and so as much as I loved my art, it wasn’t something that I could share or really learn about until later.

Also, this culture had ingrained in me since birth not to pursue any higher education, gain outside world knowledge or not to pursue really any career goals because it was viewed as materialistic, and it was viewed as Unholy and unnecessary.

I also grew up with mental illness struggles like anxiety, depression and PTSD. This also had a big impact on my work.

For a long time, I was afraid to share that part about me and my Art because I had this idea that you had to be perfect and so would put this completely unnecessary pressure on myself to show up as something that wasn’t me.

This is where I really developed my skills as an independent artist and shifted my view on the concept of professionalism and value it also fostered a great sense of solitude and connection with God.

Art has been a consistent reminder that no matter where you come from You can create the life that you want. You can design it, however you want it to be. And you can take the skills from everything you’ve learned and apply it right back to your purpose.
