Community Highlights: Meet Halie Gary of Boum Boom

Today we’d like to introduce you to Halie Gary.

Hi Halie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hi, I’m Halie Gary — the creator and creative force behind Boum Boom.
Boum Boom is my independent brand specializing in clothing, accessories, and handmade press-on nails inspired by the things I love most: Detroit culture, anime, and K-pop. I launched the brand in 2018 while pursuing my MA in Animation at DePaul University, initially focusing on apparel like hoodies and T-shirts.

In May 2025, Boum Boom evolved as I stepped into the world of press-on nail artistry. As an artist with a deep passion for both fashion and design, creating wearable nail art felt like a natural extension of my creative journey. Over the past year, sharing my work online has allowed me to grow a vibrant and supportive community of art and nail-art enthusiasts.

Boum Boom continues to be a space where my influences, identity, and love for all things bold and expressive come together — and I’m excited to keep expanding what the brand can be.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Starting something from nothing is rarely a smooth journey. I’ve been building Boum Boom since 2018, and in total I’ve made fewer than 200 sales. While the numbers may be modest, the support I’ve received—from family, friends, and my growing online community—has been powerful enough to keep me moving forward. No successful business is built overnight, and in many ways I’m grateful for that. My passion for what I create keeps me focused on the process rather than the metrics.

Since introducing press-on nails, my business has transformed in ways I never expected. The response has been energizing, inspiring me to invest even more in my craft. I’ve begun taking classes in business development and social media strategy to expand Boum Boom’s reach and share my work with a wider audience. Step by step, the brand continues to evolve—and so do I.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Boum Boom is a creative lifestyle brand that blends fashion, art, and pop culture with a bold, personal twist. Through my online shop, www.boumsroom.com
, I offer clothing, accessories, and handmade press-on nails inspired by the worlds that shaped me—Detroit culture, anime, and K-pop. Every piece is designed with intention, from the hoodies that launched the brand to the custom nail sets that have since become my signature.

What truly sets Boum Boom apart is its heart. Each product is infused with my own identity as an artist, a Detroiter, and a lifelong fan of global pop culture. Rather than chasing trends, I focus on creating wearable art that feels personal, expressive, and fun. The press-on nails, especially, showcase my love for detail and character-driven design, making them a standout for customers who want something unique, hand-crafted, and rooted in fandom.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the evolution. Boum Boom started as a small apparel line in 2018, and today it has grown into a multidimensional creative space. The shift into nail artistry in 2025 opened new doors, helping me build a thriving online community and deepen my connection with supporters who share my passions. I’ve invested in business courses, social media strategy, and product development—not just to grow the brand, but to ensure the quality and care behind each offering continues to rise.

For readers discovering Boum Boom for the first time, I want them to know this: everything I create is made with authenticity, love, and a commitment to celebrating individuality. Whether you’re looking for custom press-on nails, bold apparel, or accessories that reflect your favorite fandoms, Boum Boom is a place where art meets identity—and where every item is designed to make you feel seen, confident, and creatively inspired.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck has shown up in my life and business in unexpected ways—both good and bad—and each form has shaped Boum Boom in its own way.

On the “bad luck” side, I’ve experienced slow seasons, delayed growth, and moments where it felt like nothing was moving forward no matter how hard I tried. There were times when sales were low or life circumstances made it difficult to give the business the time and energy it needed. But those moments taught me resilience. They forced me to get creative, refine my craft, and find new ways to share my work with the world.

On the “good luck” side, I’ve met people—friends, mentors, family, and supporters—who happened to show up exactly when I needed encouragement. Sometimes a random share, a kind comment, or a surprising order has arrived at the perfect moment, reminding me why I started. I’ve also had lucky timing: discovering press-on nails when I did felt like falling into a passion I didn’t realize was waiting for me.

Overall, luck has played a role, but I don’t depend on it. What keeps Boum Boom moving is consistency, creativity, and the support of the community around me. Luck may spark a moment, but it’s the work that keeps the momentum going.
