Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Sweet.
Hi Emily, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I got started on my baking journey as soon as I was old enough to hold a wooden spoon and crack an egg by myself. I’ve always enjoyed putting hard work and soul into learning new recipes, playing with new flavor combinations, and developing new skills. Part of where I think I got my love for baking is from my great-grandmother. I was told that she was the best cook in the whole family and that she could even make dirt taste good. Unfortunately, I was never able to meet her, but I was lucky enough to hear stories of her and how her food made people happy and brought everyone together. My goal in life is working a job I love, baking for others, and sharing joy through food in hopes that it brings people together. Just like it did with my great-grandmother. That thought process has helped me to get to where I am today.
A family friend introduced me to cookie and cake decorating when I was young, and I fell in love with it instantly. Ever since that day, I have always been curious about what I can create with flour and sugar and what it can transform into. I love being creative, and baking provides me with that flexibility. I get to have fun creating a masterpiece and then when I’m done, I can eat it! Knowing I had friends and family so talented in the kitchen and who were so kind-hearted made me want to be that way too. For as long as I can remember, I have had the desire to be in a kitchen, making something. If I heard of a dessert that I had never had before, I wanted to challenge myself to make it.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. I couldn’t be where I am today without trial and error. I never used to be good at piping skills with cakes & cupcakes (borders, writing, small detail work, etc.), which as a baker is sort of a problem. I also wasn’t the fastest worker, but with time and lots of practice, I began to improve. I attended a culinary school for 2 years, which offered a lot of different challenges. But it was through those challenges that taught me how to better myself, as well as improve my work pace in the food industry. I had to go through some pretty tough classes at that school, but I believe that I have turned out for the better because of the struggles I had to go through there. People like to say, “practice makes perfect,” but it really doesn’t because no one can be perfect. But we can most certainly become more confident with ourselves and more experienced in our skills and work.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I operate a small, make-to-order bakery out of my house. I run my business’s social media accounts, communicate with customers, advertise, clean, make, bake, decorate, package orders, and take product photos. I specialize in baked goods, chocolate-covered treats, small pastries, and so much more. I would say what sets me apart from other businesses/bakeries is that I don’t make an entire day’s worth of baked goods and other foods ahead of time and have to stress about wasting anything. Since I am a smaller business, I offer more flexibility with my services than other bakeries, as I can navigate around more things, as well as fit in some last-minute requests.
Though I am still in the building stages of my business (as well as with my clientele,) a few of my regular products are popular. My chocolate-covered treats are always a hit and are on the menu all year round. During the fall season, one of my more demanded menu items are cinnamon roll cookies. Even though I am an up-and-coming bakery, I am always looking for ways to grow, create, and share my products. In the near future, I am looking to expand my skills with edible printing. This will allow me more room for creativity with my baked goods, as well as to experiment with new designs.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I feel that by following my passions of wanting to create food for others and to work hard every day, brings success to my business. I believe that my characteristics of optimism and generosity are some of the most important qualities I bring to the table for my bakery business. You never know what the power of positivity can do for someone. If I can make someone’s day, that’s everything.
