Community Highlights: Meet Deena Hazlett of Deena’s pet service

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deena Hazlett.

Hi deena, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Deena’s Pet Service started in 2019, but the thought of it has been with Deena since she was 14 years old. Deena received a book from a family member ( Pet Sitting for Profit by Patti j Morgan ). The book inspired Deena from a young age and from there she has worked with animals her entire life. From Humane Societies ,animal rescues , Boarding Kennels and vet clinics. Deena has seen just about anything that can happen in the pet world. This helped inspire her to open Deena’s Pet Service in 2019. When the Pet Service had opened in 2019 covid struck about 2 weeks later, Deena jumped fast to help those in need such as First Responders and Hospital workers working long hours. From there we have grown the business and expanded to become one of the bigger pet sitting services in southeast Michigan . With this expansion of business Deena’s daughter Brooke then started working for her helping expand the business more by working with the animals, doing website designing and customer service. Deena’s husband Mike also jumps in to help them where needed.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Some of the obstacles and challenges that we face at Deena’s Pet Service are the long hours that we work. We start typically in the morning around 5:30 a.m. and the latest we come home sometimes is 1:00 in the morning. The timing is solely based around how many animals are in our care for that day or extension of time. Another obstacle we face is working throughout the holidays, meaning we might miss spending time with our family but by this we gain family through having relationships with pets and building that family friend relationship with our clients. Another thing that we often face especially throughout the holidays or just seasonal changes is in climate weather change, such as snow and ice, cooler temperatures or high temperatures with this we have to think about the animal safety and what the animals able to handle based on weather conditions and our safety as well such as driving or walking animals and facing the risk of being injured.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
With Deena’s Pet Service we focus on the best care for your pets. We offer a variety of different services such as in-home pet care, dog walking, nail Trims on all sorts of pets (pocket pets, dogs, cats) . We also do transport from instate all the way to out-of-state some reaching all the way to Florida. The proudest moment that we have with Deena’s Pet Service is being given the opportunity to be featured in magazines or just local business pages to help grow our small family-owned business. Deena’s Pet Services sets apart from different Pet Services based on the different Services we offer as well as being insured and bonded. We are also licensed in animal CPR and First Aid.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Some things that might surprise people that don’t know much about our business is that we are a family-owned business. We also do mini Field trips with the animals to go get ice cream or just go on car rides or go to pet friendly stores with owners consent of course. We also do transportation to save wildlife that are injured and transport them to animal sanctuaries where they can receive the best help. We also donate a lot of animal feed and other pet care needs to local food banks charities and Humane Societies as well as just donating personal items to the charities, shelters, and food banks to help out the homeless, low income as well as elderly and veterans.
