Community Highlights: Meet Dawn Williams of 2Creative

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawn Williams.

Hi Dawn, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
Thank you for this great opportunity! 2Creative was born from two creative siblings with too much time on our hands! The partnership between my brother, Mason Johnson, and I actually began a lifetime ago. We were kids of an advertising genius (the late Don Johnson, founder of JohnsonRauhoff). We spent our childhood drawing, debating which commercials had the best jingle, and putting on shows for friends in the basement.

As adults Mason and I spent 20+ years as a successful art+copy team in larger agency environments. Together we created award-winning broadcast, print, and digital campaigns for a diverse portfolio including Coca-Cola, KitchenAid, Ensure, Meijer, and Jack in the Box. Now a little older and hopefully a little wiser, we walked away from the big agency life of red tape and high price tags to give small to medium business owners and startups a chance to afford really great creative. Our goal is simple–partner with a handful of cool clients to keep their brands fresh while having fun along the way.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We were nervous about launching just as the pandemic was moving across the country two years ago. But, as it turns out, it was the ideal time. With most of the world working remotely and businesses in need of fast, affordable ways to keep their brand relevant, we were in this unique position to cut to the chase with clients. After 25+ years in this industry, Mason and I are sort of hardwired to quickly identify a brand’s strengths and weaknesses then seamlessly create marketing solutions to help them truly own their story and stand out in this hyper commercialized world. Plus, we didn’t have the weight of layers of approvals to sort through, which was liberating because none of the old rules applied.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
2Creative is a boutique marketing agency in Southwest Michigan. Owned and operated by two award-winning siblings who spent a lifetime working on Fortune 500 brands but now focus on helping what we lovingly call “the underdogs” – small to medium size businesses who can’t afford a big agency but deserve solid marketing. We specialize in Brand Development, Strategic Planning, Content Creation, Graphic Design, Website Development and Social Media Management.

In addition to our diverse experience, what sets us apart is that Mason and I have a yin yang way of working. He’s the artist and I’m the writer. His imagination soars while my strategic mindset keeps work on task. As for our proudest project, that’s like asking which child you love best! We enjoy creating campaigns for all sorts of clients with budgets big and small. We’d also like your readers to know that after all these years, we still love what we do and genuinely enjoy the science of our craft. But we also believe in having fun along the way and at the end of the day, that makes all the difference.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
When Mason and I were young, we were obsessed with climbing. Trees, door frames, TV antennas – whatever challenged us, we took it on! When we discovered the reward of scaling the wooden fence attached to the side of our brick ranch that led to the roof of our home – it was a game changer. One summer, practically every time our parents left, they’d yell “STAY OFF THE ROOF!” Of course, the moment the garage door closed, up we went. One day, minutes after we sat perched like birds on the roof, we spotted our parent’s car heading back. Frantic, we were forced to take the untested emergency escape. This involved taking a running leap off the highest point of the house to (hopefully) land at the top of a nearby 15-foot pine tree that we would then climb down to avoid getting caught. Needless to say, sap-soaked trunks are not ideal jungle gyms, pine needles are no joke, and while our parents didn’t see us on the roof, the face scrapes and torn clothes were a dead giveaway.
