Today we’d like to introduce you to Cydni Robinson.
Hi Cydni, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always been a creative person throughout my life, and tapped into it more when I was younger compared to my more mature years. I just remember me always finding something to create or make whether it turned out great or not, I just loved the processes. I would also see my friends or people that I knew about who are creatives themselves, and I was always intrigued and wanted to know how they got to where they did and how I could do it too. Everything really didn’t start until, I would say, 2013 when I went to Michigan State University. I originally was studying pre-law, and I just really wasn’t connected to it. So, I had to sit down and really just figure out what it was I wanted to do, and eventually landed on journalism and communications. From there I started to enjoy classes more and really started to find my groove. I ended up getting into sports journalism and media, and I absolutely loved it! I was fortunate enough to be a part of a program that Big 10 Network has for college students called on Big Ten Student-U and was part of a team where we covered a variety of games at Michigan State. I was able to do some sideline reporting for mostly basketball but also baseball and volleyball. We were also able to experience working with different networks like FOX Sports and ESPN when they came to MSU for football or basketball games, it was an eye-opener for me and immediately a fire was lit because I just knew that’s where I wanted to end up.
Once I graduated things didn’t go as planned So I went ahead and got my master’s degree in organizational communications from Wayne State University. While doing that I reflected once again and thought about what it was, I wanted to do. Sports broadcasting was still at the top of my list, but I also realized I was interested in social media. I dove in and started to do my research and really like fell in love with it. I enjoy the many ways you’re able to connect with people and communities in a very unique and genuine way, whether it be through influencing, business, and events that are happening around the world. From there I started working on that with friends and family and from there which led me to start my own business in October 2022 Nue. Light Candle Co. I always knew I wanted to own a business, but I just never really knew what, so when the idea came to me, I went for it.
What life looks like now is me really working to grow my small business and continue to explore different social and creative outlets to learn all that I can and develop myself from there.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth road so — just like I said a few seconds ago I have all of these aspirations and typically as everyone does, you have it planned out in your head or in your journal about how you want things to go. I really wanted sports broadcasting to happen, and it didn’t after graduating so I really had to push myself to move forward. In the meantime, I did go get my master’s degree, learned more about social media, and went for other aspirations I had. The struggle for me really came down to listening to myself. I would push those thoughts or those urges to dive into those creative and social avenues and would push them off a lot just because I was so unsure or fearful of “what if?”. So, I have been working very hard to come out of that headspace and I think that I’ve been doing a really great job. I never thought that I would get this business off the ground, but it’s here, and I’m excited about it and ready to see where I can take it. I told myself in 2022 that I did not want another year to pass by where I kept asking the question “what if?” so if I tried it and it didn’t work out, I’m proud of myself, and if I tried it and I start to see some type of progress I’m even more proud of myself. It’s so cliché, but you really have to believe in yourself and just go for it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I landed on the idea to start a candle business out of my love of fragrance and just things that smell good essentially. I’ve always loved candles, but the thing about it was that I could never burn paraffin wax candles longer than an hour because I would instantly get a headache. When I landed on the decision to create Nue. light Candle Co. I really wanted to create something that could be a part of someone’s everyday routine; whether you are a person who loves to snuggle up with a good book, a self-care connoisseur, or just someone who loves to keep a flame going from day to day. My candles are made with natural coconut apricot wax, clean, non-toxic fragrances and natural wooded and cotton wicks, and some sparkle to seal the deal. I am so proud of how things have come out so far from the look and most importantly how the candles smell! I made it my mission to present a finished product to the world, and I did just that. Nue. will be re-launching the beautiful concrete vessels as well in the coming weeks. I am continuously looking for ways to improve my business over time and have some cool things planned so definitely stay tuned for that!
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I would have to say my passion and determination to reach my goals and most importantly my faith in God.
