Community Highlights: Meet Ashley Thomas of Metro Detroit Nanny

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Thomas

Hi Ashley, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
When I first started nannying, I never saw it as a long-term career. I loved the work itself—helping children grow and thrive—but I struggled to make it sustainable. Without a contract, paid time off, or fair compensation, I often found myself stuck working jobs I didn’t enjoy simply for the stability they offered. Nannying felt more like a side gig than a career, and I couldn’t see a clear path forward.

That all changed in 2018, when I discovered nanny-centered Facebook groups. For the first time, I found a community of nannies—both locally and internationally—who were thriving in this profession. They showed me what was possible: nannying as a sustainable and successful career. I dove into learning about industry standards, contracts, fair wages, and advocating for myself. The tools and knowledge I gained completely transformed my outlook, and I stepped into my role as a career nanny with confidence and clarity.

By 2022, I became more active in the nanny community on Instagram, connecting with nannies across the country. I was inspired by the vibrant, supportive nanny communities in other cities. I often found myself saying, “I wish Metro Detroit had something like this.” Then one day, it clicked—I didn’t have to wait for someone else to create it. I could build the community I was craving.

With the encouragement of my friends and a leap of faith, I launched Metro Detroit Nanny. At first, it was just me organizing playdates and sharing resources. Over time, the community grew, and so did my vision. Today, Metro Detroit Nanny has evolved into a thriving network supported by an incredible team of volunteer nannies who share my passion for connection and advocacy.

Our mission is simple yet powerful: to give nannies in Metro Detroit the knowledge, support, and community they need to thrive. From professional development workshops to social events, we aim to ensure every nanny feels valued and empowered. Now, we’re on the cusp of becoming an official nonprofit, which will allow us to expand our reach and impact even further.

Metro Detroit Nanny is more than just an organization to me—it’s a testament to the power of community, resilience, and the belief that we all deserve to thrive in the work we love.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There were plenty of moments when I felt like giving up. I remember organizing events where only a couple of people showed up—it was discouraging after putting in so much effort. On top of that, I was doing absolutely everything on my own: planning, promoting, managing social media, and more. It was overwhelming.

The turning point came after a holiday event almost didn’t happen. I had just been discharged from the hospital a few hours before, and somehow, I still pulled it off—but I knew I couldn’t keep going that way. It wasn’t sustainable, and I realized I couldn’t do it all on my own.

That’s when I decided to reach out to my local nanny community for help. Forming a team of volunteer ambassadors was a game changer. They brought fresh ideas, shared the workload, and reignited my momentum. Having a team turned Metro Detroit Nanny from a one-person project into a true community effort, and that shift has made all the difference.

As you know, we’re big fans of Metro Detroit Nanny. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are a community organization for nannies servicing the Metro Detroit area. We provide professional development opportunities, social events, and kid friendly play dates for nannies. We strive to create a welcoming, supportive environment where every nanny feels valued and respected, no matter their background or experience level.

What sets us apart is our focus on knowledge and outreach. We provide free information about industry standards, not just for nannies but for parents as well. This helps create a shared understanding and stronger partnerships between caregivers and families.

Our next professional development opportunity, InterNational Nanny Training Day, is coming up on April 12, 2025. Follow along via our social media for updates and tickets!

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Spending summers up north with my parents and cousins is one of my happiest memories. We roasted marshmellows, swam in the lake, and looked for frogs. Being given the gift of slowing down and being together is one I will cherish forever.
