Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffanie Quinn.
Hi Tiffanie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I started creating art at a very young age and chose to pursue two art degrees at Michigan State University as a freshman in 2016. This step pushed me to take my art career more seriously. However, I had always been afraid of posting my art online for everyone to see. In March of 2020, when Michigan experienced its’ first COVID-19 lockdown, I figured it was the perfect time to start sharing my art with the world. I started off posting custom-painted clocks and the demand for these jumpstarted my business – House of Quinn. I went from making the clocks for fun to getting 10+ orders every single day.
In May of 2020, I launched House of Quinn as a full art and fashion design business. Through my business and art, I encourage healing, happiness, and inclusivity. I currently offer resin items, paint parties, custom clothing, and custom art pieces as well. Additionally, as a painter, I create works with themes of healing, self-identity, and giving a voice to those who are silenced.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not. In our society, we always post our wins on social media and never the L’s or Lessons. When I first started out as a business owner, there were a lot of things I had to teach myself how to do on my own. One of the struggles for me personally was tracking expenses and sales to ensure that I was actually making a profit. It is very easy to “low-ball” yourself as a business owner- especially if you really want people to buy and enjoy your items. However, I had to learn the worth of my work. I am the accountant, social media and marketing manager, content creator, shipping department, and artist. Not understanding the time and money I invested on my own definitely impacted me negatively when I first started out. This resulted in a lot of trial and error. After one year of being a full-time artist with my business, I can confidently say that I have worked through a lot of these struggles.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
While I do have a business and love bringing a smile to customers’ faces with beautiful home pieces, my passion is in creating visual art that is therapeutic for myself and viewers. My artistic practice explores the stigmatization of mental health, neurodivergent, and sexual assault awareness. I create work that is in response to my experiences as a Black, queer, and neurodivergent woman to look at these important issues within our communities. Concepts of healing, self-identity, and giving a voice to those who are silenced through mixed-media, portraiture, and repeated action are layered onto the canvases in emotive color palettes. My work encourages consideration and challenging of societal views by asking reflective questions such as, “Why is speaking out on these topics stigmatized?” or “What needs to happen to promote healing?” Through these actions and posed questions, it is my hope that my work inspires a much-needed dialogue and evokes change so that we can address larger issues as a community and move towards collective healing.
I want to focus more on creating art that speaks to me and others within my business. Finding more ways to get more of my therapeutic and societal issue-based work out there will be more beneficial for viewers and I.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
