Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Ness
Hi Taylor, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
After working as a graphic designer and learning so much there is about editing and manipulating photos, I transitioned to freelance photo editing after discovering that many photographers would appreciate and value my skills as an outsource editing service. I was ready to go full in the beginning of 2023 and I knew this was the direction I was being called to take. I wanted to create a business that gave me the freedom to stay home with my daughter and raise her, that was my biggest reason for starting (and not quitting). Working in a creative environment for many years before, I was able to build connections with a lot of other photographers and learn so much about the industry. Many of the photographers I knew needed that extra hand to support their business. Within that first year, I was able to work with a variety of different photographers from around the world. I’ve built so many great friendships and long term connections with the clients I work with. As a private photo editor, I am able to set my own schedule, work wherever my laptop can travel, and be part of the photography industry that I love SO much. Helping photographers gain freedom through photo editing is such a JOY and I can’t wait for what’s to come!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s always challenging in the beginning when first becoming an entrepreneur! There’s so many avenues that you have to take and figuring out how to navigate what works long term and what doesn’t. I try to use my downfalls as opportunities for growth. One of the main challenges that have come up while being an editor is sticking to a balanced workflow. You will tweak the systems you set up for your business until it is perfect, and then you’ll likely tweak it some more as you find what works best for you. I recommend to all entrepreneurs to just HAVE workflows. You will need a workflow for everything in your business, including a system for on-boarding (bringing on new clients), communication, and editing catalogs. It seems like a lot, and it does take time to set these things up, but I do love having systems! They save me so much stress, and I am consistently trying to make them better to serve my clients the best I can.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a Michigan based Private Photo Editor for wedding and portrait photographers. I help photographers who are looking to outsource some of their editing. This service allows photographers to prioritize what’s important to them, save time, and speed up their turnaround time – all while staying true to their brand. My goal becoming a private photo editor is to learn their editing style and become someone that’s a part of their team. I’m there to take on the not so fun tasks of spending countless hours behind a screen and giving them back their time to cultivate more freedom to focus on other important things outside of their business. I confess I have fallen in love with the magical possibilities of photo editing and how rewarding it is to support them so they can do the things they love the most while I put the finishing touches on their images.
What matters most to you?
My family is the most important thing in my life. Every day I’m so blessed to be surrounded by the people that support me and love me to their fullest. They make all the hard days better and give me so much strength to keep striving. They’re what matters most to me and I’m forever grateful to have them by my side through it all.
