Check Out Spence Crosby’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Spence Crosby.

Hi Spence, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
It all started almost 4 years ago. I was working both for the Federal Government (TSA) and as a personal trainer at Anytime Fitness. At the time, my plan was to either work myself up through the TSA rankings or choose a different path in the federal government. I had reached a point in my life in which I thought it was time for me to have a “Big Boy” job and perhaps settle down and start a family. But something just didn’t sit well with me. Waking up at 4 in the morning to work at the airport then go straight to the gym to train people 5 to 6 six days out of the week had run its course. I had received a revelation. I no longer wanted to work for the TSA. I wanted the freedom to create my own hours. So of course, personal training at the gym seemed like the answer right. No…it wasn’t though. The gym was struggling bad to make ends meet and eventually had to cut the personal training department. I was devastated! The one thing that gave me freedom and the creativity to do what I wanted had been stripped away from me.

With that, I had a decision to make. Either work TSA full time or find another job to keep me afloat. Funny thing is, I remember working a certain position at the TSA (as we would rotate positions every so often) and I had passed out my personal training cards to random people asking them to subscribe to my YouTube channel. Then one day I got caught by one of the supervisors and I was told to stop doing that. 2 weeks later I was back at it! That’s when it had hit me. I always desired to work for myself but, I was somewhat afraid to take that leap. Being uncertain of the future did scare me a bit. Should I take that leap of faith and or keep that stable job for a bit longer. Being me and the hatred I have, feeling like a robot I just couldn’t take it anymore. I had despised the monotony of that job and I put in my two weeks.

Not having a concrete plan just a dollar and a big dream essentially, I left the TSA to open up my very own gym. I asked my mom for her to let me use her garage to train people. After, proper persuasion and the love my mom has for her oldest son she allowed me to flip her garage into a gym. The garage being a complete mess, I managed to clean it up and brought my little gym equipment I had in the basement into the garage. From there, the rest was history. I started out with 2 clients and from there, I build my clientele up. Expanding in both my clientele and gym equipment. I am doing very well for myself. The name of my business is called Building Physqiues.

As of today, I still train people but now I have decided to focus more on the online aspect of my business and continue to expand my social media influence. I decided to pursue more of the creative path. Being a YouTuber and Instagram influencer, I love the invigorating feeling I get from creating content for my community. That is my primary focus as of now and I am doing very well! The impact you make on people around the world is monumental.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
No, it has not been a smooth road. There have been serval times in which I thought to myself should I throw in the towel? HELL NO!!!

Some of the struggles have been losing and gaining clients. I lose some clients because they either move or can no longer afford training. Also, training in my garage in Michigan can be rough, especially during the cold months. Training out of the garage isn’t that appealing to many people and some aren’t too fond of training there. That can be rough at times. I don’t desire to get a new location because I am leaving Michigan soon!

Some other struggles are… Being a new father, boyfriend, older brother, son, trainer, content creator, and even working on my skills and fitness can be very stressful. It’s a lot to balance but I make it happen. Again, hearing and reading the comments from your followers make a world of difference and keep me going. As well as me wanting to show my son that anything is possible if you want it bad enough.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am the founder-owner of Building Physiques. Which is my training business as well as my brand for creating content. I work as a fitness trainer and content creator. I specialize in calisthenics (bodyweight training), martial arts (capoeira, taekwondo, and boxing), and just overall fitness. I am known for my martial arts and bodyweight skills. As well as being a huge anime nerd, I am known for the anime workout creator, I create fun workouts based on different anime shows and characters.

I am most proud of my discipline, laser focus, and determination. As well as my current skill set. The thing that sets me apart from others is my creativity and versatility with my skill set.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
What has worked for me honestly is just to really believe in yourself! No matter what! Don’t ever feel like you can’t contribute something to this world. We all have a gift! You just have to find it and once you do, live, breathe and sleep it!

The biggest thing that has worked for me is just combining my passions and creating content for people through social media or training people in what I love to do. I love anime, fitness, and martial arts. That’s the path I have chosen. Once you walk your path of truth and happiness you will began to attract others individuals like yourself and that’s when it will take off for you. Just really believe in yourself!
