Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawna Mang.
Hi Shawna, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Sure! It really has been an accumulation of interests and skills sets throughout my life that has brought me here. I had an 18-year career as a hairstylist and color educator. That grew me in so many ways. It sharpened my eye for shape, line, and symmetry, balance, color, and chemistry. It also gave me the skills to connect with people in a very real and authentic way as well as how to put myself and my work out there. It taught me how to challenge myself and strive for a standard of quality I was proud of with each guest I had in my chair. My passion for sewing children’s clothing lent to a knowledge of pattern, texture, shape, and drape. Then, a 2-year venture as a farmer/ florist brought me business and marketing skills, floral design education, as well as a broad knowledge of florals, connections, and relationships that I value very much!
After an 18-year career as a hairstylist, I stepped away in 2020 to homeschool my two children Scarlet (15) and Kase (12). I had recently taken the Floret Online Workshop and started a business growing, selling, and designing flowers alongside homeschool. In late spring of 2021, we moved, and I closed that business in late fall of 2021. Last winter, I really took time to figure out what was next for me and came across this incredible method of preserving flowers. I spent the next several months learning and gaining skills in modern flower preservation and launched The Evermore Floweret with the support of my amazing husband, Mike, in April of this year.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have been a lot of learning curves I have had to take on over the years. The biggest struggle I have had to overcome is really learning not just how to run a business, but one that will be successful and sustainable. The other big struggle has been one of self-doubt. It took me a while to understand that failure, or what we perceive as failure, is part of the process to get where you are going. I have a sign hanging in my studio that says, “If it’s to be, it’s up to me.” and I know that to continue whatever it is in life that I want to do; I must push self-doubt aside and move forward regardless. That is a lesson I have to come back to time and time again.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
Thank you so much! What I do is unique in that I specialize in resin cast wedding bouquet floral preservation. I am known for creating beautiful pieces from the flowers that connect brides to the memories of their wedding day. I love what I do, I love why I do it, and I love who I do it for.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I had a really great childhood. One of my favorite memories is of my grandmother teaching me how to sew. She would have me sit in her sewing room and practice straight lines and then curves. She really fostered a love of creating and making in me. I am grateful to her for that. She’s passed on now, but I know she would love what I was doing and be really proud.
