Today we’d like to introduce you to Richard Parrott Iv
Hi Richard, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was already in the groove of my music industry position being the head of Global Money World and a member of the Recording Academy for the Grammys, when my Uncle Karl asked me if I wanted to announce high school football games at Houseman Field.
From my first day I was hooked and really enjoyed not only the competitive atmosphere but the sense of community as well. When the season was coming to an end, I knew wanted to stay around and was promised a football team to coach for the next season.
To get ready I thought it would be a great idea to start coaching basketball since I had some previous experience and got in at City Middle/ High as the head basketball coach. I instantly fell in love with the kids I got to coach and just the game of basketball. After the boys season ended I decided to coach the girls team as well.
We had a successful season and won a championship. I wasn’t ready to take time off, so me and my brother Nico decided to start Global Basketball Academy. It was a great way to not only stay competitive but also stay connected to the kids we coached at City as well.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all but a road worth traveling. Along the way we’ve learned so much. We had to find a space to practice and the United Methodist Community House opened up there doors to us.
We also had to help get kids there and raise funds to ensure everyone could play, as well as deal with competitors trying to take kids from us, which is something I never factored in but also learned to not take personal. As long as the kids continue to play basketball that’s what matters most
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m the head basketball coach and program director of AAU club Global Basketball Academy and Head Junior Varsity Girls Basketball Coach for East Grand Rapids High School.
I would say my specialty is player development. Teaching kids great fundamentals as well as pouring into their confidence. With basketball it’s such a game of confidence so I always treat that with the most care.
I’m most proud of winning a championship, coaching at a top school, and starting my own program are things that have made my heart so full in this journey
