Check Out Nkenge Browner’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nkenge Browner.

Hi Nkenge, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I got started in activism at 15. Through personal hardships and a desire for safety and belonging my mentors taught me community organizing. I started the first GSA (gay/straight student alliance) at a Detroit Public School. As an activist I focuses on inequality within the black lgbtq community, trafficking, homelessness, and intimate partner violence.
Activism forced me to have a deep understanding of my communities and myself. This understanding led to musings and art. I write and create as a means to emotionally ground and survive.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a teenager I found myself without stable housing. Homelessness impacted my ability to attend school. I ended up leaving traditional school in 10th grade. I later went on to get my GED, then social work degree.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a writer and artist. i an the author of three books. My subject matter explores black womanhood, queer femme identity, urban survival and celebration and healing. My art focuses on repurposing sentimental objects into relics.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory is coming down the giant slide on Detroits Belle Island park. It was my first experience with freedom.
