Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Wallace
Hi Natalie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
During my freshman year of high school, my in-person experience was abruptly cut short due to the pandemic in 2020. With the government implementing quarantine measures, I found myself spending most of my time in my room working on my previous online clothing business and watching countless YouTube videos. I became particularly interested in makeup, hair, and nail tutorials, but it was the makeup videos that really captured my attention.
As the months went by and local stores began to open up, I took the opportunity to shop for supplies in person rather than ordering online. I bought a few drugstore products and decided to try my hand at doing my own makeup. Though it wasn’t perfect, it turned out surprisingly well and I was proud of the results.
What started as a fun hobby quickly turned into a passion. Makeup became my little escape from the world, and I spent my free time watching tutorials and experimenting with different looks. I started posting my makeup creations on social media, and to my surprise, people loved what I was doing! Encouraged by the positive feedback, I took a leap of faith and officially launched my makeup business in 2021. I began practicing on friends and family and eventually started taking clients at home.
For the next two years, I worked out of my bedroom, and during that time, I gained valuable knowledge, experience, and most importantly, confidence. My client base grew steadily, and I’m incredibly grateful for the support I received along the way. After graduating high school in 2023, I realized that I needed a more professional setting for my growing business. So, I took another leap and signed the lease for my first beauty suite.
Now, with the grace of God, I’ve been able to build a thriving clientele, create an ebook to teach my skills, and even offer makeup classes to help others learn. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m excited for what the future holds!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest challenge I faced came in 2021, when my father saw the potential in my business and gave me the most incredible birthday gift: the keys to my very first suite. I was beyond excited—words couldn’t even describe how happy I was. It felt like a dream come true. But as time went on, things started to take a turn. I quickly realized that my clientele wasn’t large enough to sustain the weekly rent payments, and there were weeks where I found myself struggling to keep up. Sometimes, I would barely make enough to cover the rent, and I started to feel like I was losing more than I was gaining.
After a lot of advice from my parents and friends, I made the tough decision to move my business back into my bedroom. At the time, I felt so discouraged and devastated. I even began to wonder if I should give up altogether. But looking back now, that was one of the best decisions I could have made. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise.
Moving back home allowed me the time and space to focus on building my clientele and saving money, rather than paying rent in a suite with little to no clients. I put my trust in God and let everything unfold naturally. It was a humbling experience, but I’m so grateful for how it all worked out in the end.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a makeup artist in the metro Detroit area specifically specializing in natural/ soft glam makeup. I’m known for creating beautiful soft & sultry makeup on many different textures and styles of skin. If you’re ever looking for a makeup artist feel free to book with me, you won’t be disappointed!
What I’m most proud of is my ability to create beautiful looks that make women feel confident and stunning in their own skin. Enhancing someone’s natural beauty and boosting their self-confidence is incredibly special to me. That feeling truly warms my heart, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
What sets me apart is not just my amazing personality, but also my professionalism, ambition, and deep passion for what I do!
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I believe risk-taking is something everyone should experience at least once in their life—and honestly, even more often. If I hadn’t taken the risk to start my business, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I can’t even imagine what my life would look like, but I’m grateful for where I’ve ended up. A lot of people shy away from risks because they’re afraid of failing, but my advice to anyone feeling that fear is this: To succeed, you can’t be afraid of taking a loss. If you’re ready for a win, you have to be willing to embrace the lessons that come with failure. Take those losses, learn from them, and keep pushing forward. Failure isn’t an option—just keep getting up and trying until you get it right.
