Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Stevens.
Hi Mike, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
We opened Oceana Bike and Boat in 2024 because we love cycling and there wasn’t anyone renting out bicycles in the area. Since that time we’ve expanded to bike sales and service.
In late 2025 we opened Oceana Soap Company with the passion being quality hand crafted soaps, solid lotions and beard care products made locally using natural ingredients. Play hard, clean up well is our philosophy!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When we started the business we also rented kayaks, canoes and stand up paddleboards. However the business just isn’t there and when we consider the cost of operating, including obtaining liability insurance, we decided to close that portion of our business. We sell used kayaks and paddles and may offer additional human powered paddle options in the future.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I retired from my corporate role a couple years ago wanting to focus on building a business that I’m passionate about and that gives back. As a lifelong cyclist opening a “bike shop” made a lot of sense. Since that time we’ve also added Oceana Soap Company where we produce handcrafted soaps, solid lotions, beard care products and more!
We believe exercise and fitness is essential to our collective well being and there’s a natural synergy between exercising and cleaning up afterwards.
Play hard, clean up well is our philosophy and we live it every day!
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I think mentors are fantastic and I have them in my life. I would suggest when looking for a mentor, the selection is one who has experience in the area the mentor is wanted/needed.
This person should also be someone you can trust to give you honest feedback vs telling you what you want to hear.
