Check Out Marquin Evans’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marquin Evans

Marquin, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey to business ownership is what I would consider a pretty un-traditional route. To keep a long story short, I graduated from Western Michigan in 2020 with my Master’s in Psychology and immediately entered the corporate world, in the midst of a pandemic, all while nurturing this creative passion of mine: wedding videography. 5 years, 2 great jobs, and a lot of tough decisions later I am officially a full-time wedding videographer/business owner at Quin The Capturer Films.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
At times yes, and at other times no. I’ve always known that I wanted to be an entrepreneur and carve out my own space, but that idea came into contention with what I was told and believed was the best route to a successful life. The very idea of working for myself still at times terrifies me as much as it excites me.

Finding time to explore my creative passions during my schooling and 5 years of corporate work were not easy. There were some late nights and events missed during those years, but I knew it came with the nature of the work and that was something I was going to have to get used to. I think at times I looked at those who were in pursuit of the same dreams as me and wondered how they were able to do it so “easily” (not knowing all of the hard work it likely took them to get there). But in the midst of those periods of comparison, I began to understand that to do something this different would require a level of dedication that I didn’t initially anticipate.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a wedding videographer, who specializes in a documentary-style of storytelling. I also do some work as a multimedia specialist working with small-to-medium sized businesses who need photo/video assets for their online/social media presence.

I think what sets me apart from others in my field is my ability to make the couples and people I work with feel truly comfortable. It might be a bit because of my psych background and the number of hours spent networking in graduate school, but I believe I possess a special knack for carrying authentic conversation that allows people to open up about themselves. This is such an important piece of being a storyteller; cultivating space for people to tell the raw and real version of their love/journey/life.

What I’m most proud of is being able to capture and deliver such special memories to people who I’ve created genuine connections with. The response you get after delivering a wedding film or gallery of digital assets is one of the best feelings there is (right behind the couple who STILL watches your film all these years later and always tells you when they do).

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
To expect the unexpected.
