Today we’d like to introduce you to Lyanna Moore.
Hi Lyanna, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I love this question. I thought I knew what I wanted to do with my life; become a photojournalist. But as we know, life leads us to our true purpose. While becoming a parent, I found myself being a resource to friends, colleagues, and community. I took the time to learn from them and realized that many of them struggled to feel seen, heard, and supported by their medical providers. I also learned that Black women are 3-4 times more likely to die from preventable causes than their white counterparts. I knew I had to become a well-trusted support to my community, so I trained to become a Certified Lactation Specialist and Doula.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I definitely had struggles along the way; moments of self doubt, no clients, missed opportunities, and balancing my responsibilities. I have had to dust myself off and give myself grace.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a Certified Doula, Certified Lactation Specialist, and childbirth educator. I focus on marginalized communities, including BIPOC and 2SLGBTQIA, who are at a higher risk. I lead with love and understanding so that every family i work with feels cared for and empowered in their journey.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Yes! Remember that a good plan is a starting point but don’t be afraid to make changes, to try something new, to fail. If you keep yourself in a box you can block opportunities that could elevate you.
