Check Out Lisa Schmidt’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Schmidt.

Lisa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my business journey in 2012 as a dating and relationship coach for men in the Metro Detroit area. During that time, I ran a luxury matchmaking service too. Which was also fun and challenging in its own ways. Before all of that, I slung drinks and ran a bar staff for 17 years.

When I left the coaching industry, I knew I’d be back but didn’t want to continue with one-on-one coaching. I wanted to tap into my creative roots of writing.

I am a huge word nerd! I remember tearing through a book a day as a child and writing as early as 12 years old. As a grown-up, I was able to use this passion for writing to become a contributor for Huffington Post, Elite Daily, and several online publications.

In 2017 I decided it was time to dip my toes back in the online world. Originally, I thought I would try my hand at being a Virtual Assistant. After some research, I decided that Copywriting was a better fit. A decision I am now glad that I made because copy work has been one of the best adventures!

I have been able to hone my skills through personal clients and working with brand designers, helping their clients to elevate their unique skills and services. I’ve had the pleasure of writing copy for dating coaches, dentists, photographers, course creators, and health and wellness providers, to name a few.

This work was put on pause briefly while I went back into the restaurant industry for a few years. When that ended in August 2022, I took a month off to really evaluate my next steps. I could go the easy route and go back to running bars, or I could follow my passion of working for myself.

It was a no-brainer. I enrolled in a course for UX (user experience) Copywriting and started networking to find clients. While it hasn’t been without its bumps in the road, it is hands down the BEST decision I have ever made.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest challenge is always defining your uniqueness and finding a way to connect that to what people are looking for in a copywriter. This is a creative industry with a lot of different perspectives, so it can be overwhelming for a client to choose the right writer for their business. It’s a very personal decision.

Taking time off was definitely something of a hinderance to my journey. Looking back, I would have done it differently, but I also know that I would not be where I am today had I forged ahead. I’ve been able to connect with myself and the work in an entirely different way having had that break. I gained a certification in UX, made amazing connections, and done some pretty cool work since restarting my business.

It even led me to creating a Print on Demand greeting card and t-shirt line. Again… timing is everything. This new venture is such an amazing creative outlet, but it too comes with a learning curve. I have had to stretch my knowledge and muscles in a completely different aspect of digital marketing. It’s a welcome challenge!

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a UX (user experience) Copywriter. In a nutshell: UX prioritizes the buyer/reader/client goals above the company goals. The creedo is to create an effortless journey that takes the heavy lifting off of client so that they feel led to make a buying or opting-in decision easily. No sleazy or sneaky selling practices here. Empathy and raw emotion is where it’s at because after all we are talking human to human, despite the fact that these words are presented on a web page or a social platform.

I am most proud of something that is not technically Copywriting. This article went viral back in 2015: https://www.huffpost.com/entry/10-things-that-changed-me-after-the-death-of-a-parent_b_7925406

I ended up receiving hundred of emails from readers. While a small percentage were to criticize my POV, the vast majority were words of thanks. People wrote to me from deathbeds and funeral homes all to say that they felt heard in a way that they themselves could not explain. I think I spent at least a week in tears reading my daily email.

What sets me apart from other Copywriters is that I am me. Like anyone reading this, we are all so very unique in how we approach our work. I am the best me at what I do.

I believe in taking a deep dive into whatever a client brings me. I spend hours researching the client’s current social media, website, blogs, as well as their competitors. I’m naturally curious, so this is actually fun for me.

I specialize in sales pages and email sequences, so the love I have for creating a journey for someone reading my words fuels my copy skills. I recently wrote an email sequence for a company selling an online course for modern embroidery. I know nothing about embroidery, but I made it my mission to gain knowledge and infuse that with the client’s voice and personality. Needless to say, they were thrilled and had a very successful launch.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Surround yourself with a community of like-minded people in your chosen profession. Make it a goal to seek out people who are doing what you are doing and connect! Schedule calls, comment in Facebook groups, rub elbows on LinkedIn, or wherever your people are. Don’t connect because you think it will bring money. Connect for support and encouragement. Connect because you will need a support system that is not your friends and family.

Pricing:

  • Sales pages $1750
  • Email sequences $1100
  • Copy Consulting/auditing $700 and up
