Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Sarasin.
Hi Lisa, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Our farm journey began in the fall of 2020 when I was working a part time job at a farm in Colorado. My favorite position was taking care of their goats and 2 alpacas. I spent about 6 weeks at this farm, and it did not take long for me to fall in love with these amazing creatures. I came home every day talking the ear off my husband about these alpacas. Over the next couple of years, I began to pray and ask God for the direction and purpose he has for our lives. In 2022 our kids graduated high school and my husband wanted to come back home to northern Michigan; so we packed up and put our 2 goats in a trailer and moved. In the fall of 2023, we finally purchased our property and 9 months later we had our first 5 alpacas and 2 guardian dogs. Our adventure into the world of alpaca farming began. We learned as much as we could about alpacas, alpaca care, fiber, and husbandry. We worked on developing products out of our alpaca fiber and opening a small farm stand. The best part is farm opening days, tours and homeschool events, where we can teach others about God’s creation and spreading the word on these amazing animals. We find ways to use our animals for God’s mission volunteering for a variety of events such as The Christmas Journey and Hope Came with New Hope Community Church; in addition, to supporting the local 4-H. Along the way our farm expanded with ducks, geese and sheep.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest struggle that we have faced is the financial start up process. When starting a farm and building a from scratch requires a lot of start-up cost and it takes time to get going.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My gift as a craftsman is one given from God. I am always fiddling and making projects. I have a variety of mediums that I work with sewing, fiber art, fiber wreath, ornaments, crocheting and so on. All of my projects are different and unique. I create and develop assorted craft kits so others can enjoy the fiber arts as well.
