Today we’d like to introduce you to Lexi Block.

Hi Lexi, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Photography has always been something I knew I needed to be a part of my life and hoped would be a career path for me in one way or another. I first was intrigued by photography as a child at my cousin’s wedding when the wedding photographer they hired allowed me to take a few photos on their film camera – from there the obsession truly blossomed. I began asking for a new camera every birthday and Christmas and quickly became the friend that was always documenting. Once I was in high school, our school district offered off-campus courses that encouraged students to narrow down their studies to reflect the career path they were hoping to get into. I took this opportunity to take a film and digital media course, which only fueled my passion for photography and the art behind it. It took me a few years after high school to really determine which path I wanted to take, but eventually I landed on documenting weddings, couples and all things love and lifestyle! I got into second shooting in 2021, which allowed me to shadow more experienced and seasoned photographers at weddings. I was able to take that knowledge and portfolio and create my own business, which allows me to travel for weddings and photoshoots of my dreams!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I truly don’t think anything in life is a “smooth road” – and if it is – you’re not reaching your maximum potential! Starting a business from the ground up will always pose challenges that allow you to grow in life. There’s no owner’s manual to becoming a business owner (or life in general!) which means there’s no right and wrong way to do it! Being a one-woman show is easily the most challenging but rewarding part of this journey – I’ve had to learn how to juggle responding to emails, book-keeping, client calls, social media and marketing, insane hours of editing, and travel on top of being a wife, dog/cat mom, working part time as a bartender and a home-owner! Attempting to “do it all” with no coaching or training booklet is easily the biggest struggle I face as a business owner, but also the most rewarding!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in what I call “love and lifestyle photography” – basically this covers everything from weddings and maternity sessions, to branding sessions and headshots! One of my favorite parts about this job is taking clients from strangers to friends. I have had the honor of building relationships with people that inquired with me for an engagement session 3 years ago, that I now go on monthly coffee or dinner dates, attend their baby showers and get to call best friends!
I am so thankful to have love and passion for customer service, which allows me to make these connections and enhance my business model. I truly believe taking a pretty photo is a very minor part of this career, and the quality that sets me apart from others is my ability to make my clients feel comfortable around me as well as in front of the camera, which in turn, created images that feel candid and authentic rather that stiff and overly posed.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I think most people would be surprised to know that I don’t do this full time. I also choose to bartend part time at a family owned bar in Belding, MI that I love SO much. I’ve always loved working in the service industry (and the extra cash is always a bonus!).

I strive on having a strong work ethic and keeping my schedule as busy as possible!
