Check Out Lauren Turner’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Turner.

Hi Lauren, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Originally from the Westside of Detroit, performing has been in my blood. I began in the world of theater as a member of Paperbag Productions, an award-winning youth theater group. After High School, I decided that acting was fun but I’d rather interview the actors as a journalist. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Broadcast Journalism and received a technical certification in radio and Tv from the CSB school of Broadcasting in Atlanta.

In the last decade or so, I’ve had the amazing opportunity to work as an entertainment reporter for CBS, The CW, Viacom, Radio One, and recently anchored northern Michigan’s #1 lifestyle program, The Four.

My career and life has not been without setbacks. In 2012, I had the first of two major open back surgeries which left me unemployed and temporarily disabled. Once recovered from the surgeries, I decided to start my own website and focus on what I love most… FILM! This way, my chronic pain and health issues would never be looked down upon by a boss and I could truly create my own destiny. www.laurenlovesit.com

Fast forward to 2022 and I am a certified film critic, a lifestyle expert, a wife, and a new mom!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Many obstacles begin to surface when you are following your dreams. For me, moving to LA in my 20s with five hundred dollars in my pocket was the first of many struggles. Finances were definitely an issue but I always figured out a way and when you are doing what you love with a set goal in your future, miracles can and will happen!

MY MAJOR setback would have to be 2012 – 2015. Those were the years of physical pain, mental turmoil, hospital rooms, and no time for hosting or reporting, or doing anything I once dreamed of. That time, was hard but I always felt I would eventually get back on track. It took a while but we are so blessed with technology and accessible tools that I was able to start creating videos and blog posts from my bed!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’ve always incorporated LOVE in my branding. I am all about love and definitely look on the bright side of everything! Laurenlovesit.com s just another piece of my LOVE puzzle. I review movies & television and I usually focus on the good parts of each film or show. 🙂

I believe in quality and I’m very proud of my reviews… we put a lot of time and effort in the content and the editing.

I am proud to be a young black woman changing the face of film criticism, I respect the Siskel and Eberts of the world but with the ever-changing narrative, there needs to be diverse representation in ALL fields.

I’m also proud to have full circle moments like coming home to Michigan to anchor “the four’ and being recognized by the Michigan Chronicle as one of the top 40 most influential people in the State

What matters most to you? Why?
I know it may seem cliche but FAMILY I have never felt so strongly about family.

The pandemic can truly put things in perspective and even though I love my career, my husband and new baby (she’s 4 weeks old today) are the most important part of my life…they matter most
