Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelvin Wyatt.
Hi Kelvin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey starts at the age of 7 when I was first introduced to martial arts. I loved the beauty of these fighters training and defeating the villain. It also gave me a feeling of strength as I dealt with everyday life as a kid. From, there I gained a love for fitness and was able to start attending Karate classes. However, throughout the years I had a hunger for learning other arts that were not Asian influenced. There was little to no art that I could find until I came across Capoeira.
This opportunity next started my journey in Capoeira in 1997. From there I trained with my first teacher for 10 years however I always thrived on a deeper understanding of Capoeira. This led me to find another Mestre to learn from which I gained the opportunity to go to Brazil and train in Capoeira Angola of Bahia. In 2009 I graduated with the title Treinel (teacher) in Capoeira Angola and I have continued to grow in Capoeira Angola.
After traveling to Salvador, Bahia in 2014 I was next graduated with the title Contra-Mestre in Brazil. My goal is to pass on the culture of Brazil through understanding, respect & peace. This led to us forming Creative Movement Brazil and the annual Brazilian Day Street Festival in Michigan. This is a yearly event that offers the city of Detroit the opportunity to experience Brazilian culture, food, music, and art.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a struggle at times to meet individuals who want to do the work and not just talk about the work.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I come from a background in illustration and graphic design. I was in this field for 15 years but I migrated into apparel creation. On the side, I run Orixas Artist LLC which created unique t-shirts, etc. that are black influenced with a message. Also, I have moved back into photography and costume design.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
It has helped me meet individuals which helped influenced me to come out of my shell.
