Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaylee Price.
Hi Kaylee, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started out singing and dancing to the music my parents would listen to daily. Artists like Chris brown, Alicia Keys, Kanye West, etc. I loved the variations of music I heard and it inspired me to be as creative as possible with my own words. I started imagining instrumentals in my head and writing down lyrics as early as 5 years old, which led me to recording videos of me trying to rap and uploading them to YouTube. At age 9 I started singing for my church which every great singer usually started in. I learned about harmonies and my vocal range while in that time. By age 12 I played 3 different percussive instruments for my church and I still sang from time to time but I was ready to do my own thing, so I started writing songs in my phone every single day until about age 14 when my dad took me to the studio of the first time. I fell in love with hearing the words I put together in the tracks which inspired me to go even harder. I played with rap, then pop, now indie and alternative. I am a product of my environment.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not, I’ve struggled with anxiety and depression which can make me feel unmotivated to work on my craft some days. The easiest thing I ever did was not give up completely. Anyone who loves something can never let others decide that they are no good or that they cannot do it, it’s up to them to decide whether or not they will put in the work, and that’s something I’ve had to instill in myself this last year alone.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Aside from my music I am an entrepreneur, I’m looking to pioneer a new form of business in the construction industry geared towards family and connection. I am close to obtaining my builders license and a degree in construction management which will help me in the long run with my goals for a company. I don’t like to share too many details as my idea is still fresh and in the works, but you will see me one way or another if it’s in music or not! I am a force to be reckoned with.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I like the amount of opportunities there are at the touch of a hand in Detroit. I feel like it’s unlike any other city, but the downfall to it, is the greed that some have. It’s not uncommon to know someone who has the advantage but they refuse to help pick others up unless they have something to gain from the opportunity. While that’s a good business mindset, it’s not a good human mindset. We should all look to a helping hand and then extend our for those who come after us.
