Check Out Katie Morgan’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Morgan.

Katie Morgan

Hi Katie, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I graduated from Wayne State University Cum Laude with a degree in Art History and a minor in Fine Art. During school, I worked at The Detroit Institute of Arts and fell head over heels in love with the art world. After graduating, I became an art dealer and traveled the country with work. Nearly a decade later, I met my husband and stepped back from the career world to start a family. I soon became a stay-at-home mom and really came into my own creativity. I found social media to be a great outlet. Being a terrible cook, I started my blog and YouTube, “Don’t Burn Dinner,” where I tried out recipes on my husband, usually resulting in a laugh, the smoke detector, and ordering a pizza.

Our wedding got a lot of attention, which grew my Instagram @dontburndinner substantially in a short amount of time. My Instagram is a space I create beautiful content from our European travels, botched recipes, or anything lighthearted. Then, of course, came my first book NEVER THE LOT.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s not easy balancing motherhood and creativity. It’s difficult to not lose yourself when you’re knee-deep in laundry and the sink is overflowing with dirty dishes. But the solution was simple. Get them involved. My boys love watching me draw, so we illustrate the pages together. The books are for them anyways. They choose the colors or the shapes, and they help me decide on the characters. When I started looking at my writing process as a bonding experience with my children, I started to prioritize it over the dishes. I’m grateful I shifted my perspective to what was really important.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My first and most import job is being a mom to my two sons. Being their mom is what I’m most proud of. My second job is an author. I am fortunate to have one book published thus far. My book, “NEVER THE LOT,” is about a Christmas tree afraid to grow because he doesn’t want to be chopped down. It’s an uplifting story about knowing your self-worth. I’m currently working on finding an agent to help me publish the rest of the stories on my overflowing writing desk. I’m excited to see what the future brings.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
My takeaway from the Covid-19 crisis was the human spirit needs art. In the most uncertain of times, when we all thought the world was ending, we baked bread. We recreated famous works of art; we made pillow forts, and we painted. In the darkest of times, our comfort was art. Never undermine the importance of what you create. If a million people read my book and it only helped one person…it helped one person. It was worth it.
