Check Out Kami Powell’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kami Powell. 

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Kami, I am owner of Divine Beauty Bar and a certified lash and permanent make-up artist in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I started my journey in the beauty industry in November of 2020, prior to that I was in school for nursing and worked at the Children’s Hospital for eight years as a medical assistant. While working there, I never fully felt satisfied so on a random day, I had a heart-to-heart with one of my best friends about my passion of beauty and at that time was introduced to lashing. After doing tons of research, I found the perfect trainer in Southfield, Michigan, and took her two-day lash course. My goal was to offer a variety of services to set myself apart from others. One year and three months after lashing I took a permanent makeup class for eyebrows, also in the Southfield area, and started doing permanent makeup in February 2022. I really wanted to make a career out of my passion so I decided to start at Mosley’s School of Cosmetology to obtain my Esthetician license May of 2022 and quit my 9 to 5 completely! 

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Overall, it was not too difficult to get lash clients starting off. My daughter was a senior in high school and helped market me to her friends who all came to support. I also had lots of support from family as well. For permanent makeup, I was able to have models lined up when I started and since then word of mouth has been huge for clientele. My biggest challenge was coming up with funding for Esthetician school. I looked high and low for grants and even connected with Michigan Works, but there was nothing available. I considered Douglas J, but the cost was almost $14,000, and with being in school for nursing I was not eligible for financial aid, which would’ve left me paying over $10,000 out of pocket. 

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Divine Beauty Bar specializes in eyelash extensions, tattoo eyebrows (PMU), Henna brows, facials, and teaching for eyelash extensions and Henna brows. I am quickly developing a solid reputation for creating custom looks for each and every client, leaving everyone looking and feeling amazing! I truly believe whatever the client’s vision is, I can make it come to realization. I am extremely proud of my growth in permanent makeup as it was a long seven months of practicing before I worked on an actual client. If you’re not familiar with permanent makeup, it is a tattoo giving you a make-up look lasting one to three years. Currently, I offer eyebrows, but I am looking to expand my PMU services to lips, scalps, eyeliner, and camouflage, which I believe will truly set me apart from others. If you’re not sure about permanent makeup, Henna is always a great start. Henna is dye that is derived from a plant that stains the hair and skin lasting from two to four weeks. 

What matters most to you?
Growth! I think growing in whatever you do and whatever you love is huge, especially in the industry of beauty where you’re always and forever a student. There will always be new ways and techniques to do something, and being able to learn and grow in your craft will truly set you apart from other artists. My goal is to be distinct, not extinct!
