Check Out John Gist’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Gist.

Hi John, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my musical journey at the age of 9 when I learned to play the viola. After showing a basic level of proficiency on that instrument, I switched to the alto saxophone and started playing in the church band and choir at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Grand Rapids, MI, thanks to my uncle Paul, who was the choir director there. He introduced me to Gospel Saxophonist Reverend Bernard Johnson, which helped me develop my playing-by-ear skills.

At 19, I gave my life to Jesus Christ and started playing professionally throughout Michigan. Over the years, I have played with several bands, including Blue Water Kings Band, The Music That Raised Us Group, Bridge Street Band, Troll For Trout, Civic Theater, Circle Theater, and Big Band Nouveau, in addition to several church and studio sessions and festivals.

My relationship with Jesus Christ has been a critical factor in my success. Today, I am serving at LifeQuest in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and continue to play music professionally.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As a professional musician, I have experienced both the highs and lows that come with the job. Throughout my journey, I have learned valuable lessons about commitment and perseverance.

While the musical aspect of playing saxophone came naturally to me, the business side proved to be the biggest struggle. However, I was fortunate to have many peers, colleagues, and mentors who have helped me learn and navigate both aspects of the music business.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
If I were to summarize what I do, I create atmosphere through music by manipulating sound waves.

What makes you happy?
My faith and my spiritual journey makes me happy because it makes me a better musician, husband, father, and friend.
