Check Out Jesse Bens’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jesse Bens. 

Jesse, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve played instruments and written music most of my life. In 2012 I wrote the song 31/13, and that’s what started the Durt Music project. From that song, the project has grown to 11 albums and 4 EPs. I approach music with expressionism in mind. I like to record a lot of layers that talk to each other, and I also like a good ripping guitar solo. The music is eclectic. There’s dance music, jam, punk rock, acoustic folk, hard rock, and more. I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I was in a high-speed rollover accident in my early 20s while under the influence of drugs and have had long-term issues from the concussion following the accident. I went to rehab and eventually quit both drinking and hard drugs. The entire Durt catalog has been recorded since then. It’s been a safe place for me to process my life and express myself constructively. The weightlessness I feel when the energy clicks just right in a jam is why I do it. I’m grateful to have a second chance. 

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I write and record all of the Durt music. I specialize in guitar playing. I can create really intricate layers, and I can also carry an extended guitar solo. I’m always most proud of whatever my latest work is, which is currently the album Flamingo. Each project I’ve released has felt like an improvement, and I’m really enjoying the ride. 

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Risk-taking is essential to growth. I think by repeatedly putting myself out there for people to listen to for free, I’ve taken some risk but also always left the door open for anyone in the world to jam Durt. So far, Durt has surpassed 100 streams in over 40 countries.
