Check Out Jay Wheeler’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Wheeler.

Jay, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
In 1992 I was getting a tattoo at the local tattoo studio–Eternal Tattoos Livonia. The owner (Terry “Tramp” Welker) came into the room to talk to the artist that was tattooing me. He told him (Donny Cox) that he needed to hire another artist because he was going to expand. I was going to art school at the time (Wayne State University) hoping to get a degree in Fine Arts with concentration in drawing. Since I considered myself an artist, I spoke up, and told the owner. He grunted in amusement, and he gave me a barrage of drawing tests on the spot. Apparently, I passed and he agreed to take me on as his apprentice. I quit school the next day, and was tattooing full time within a few months.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are struggles all the way. The tattoo industry is very competitive and you have to work hard to improve your techniques. Fortunately, for me, I worked along side some of the most talented artists in the business. We were all constantly trying to push and challenge each other. Learning in that environment made all the difference.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I primarily focus on realistic, black and gray tattooing. I specialize in Portraits, Animals and detailed reproductions. I also do a considerable amount of religious work, which I enjoy. I like everything that has a positive expression for the person wearing it.

I would say what sets me apart is, although I focus on black and gray tattooing, I also have the ability to do extensive color work. And, I do quite a bit of that as well.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My advice would be to stick with the fundamentals. If you can line straight and clean, shade smooth, and color vibrantly, the rest will take care of itself.
