Today we’d like to introduce you to Jane Stoepker
Hi Jane, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Jane began her greeting card career at 6-years old, making cards for family and friends. After receiving a BFA at Michigan State University, she embarked on a graphic arts career that took her from Michigan to Chicago to New York, while still creating her own personal greeting card line on the side. Upon returning to Michigan, her focus on art included obtaining a Maters of Art and Teaching at Wayne State University in Detroit, which led her to a successful career teaching art. Her initial desire to pursue her own artistic creations, including greeting cards, never went away and resulted in the founding of SeeJaneRun. Jane’s success as an illustrator was recognized by the Muskegon Museum of Art in 2020 and was featured in the “20 f0r 20: Celebrating Michigan Illustrator”s”. Her children’s books, written and illustrated by Jane, were featured at a west Michigan bookstore and, along with her greeting cards, have been sold on line.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I don’t think any road is smooth! The bumps in learning along the way, with the twists and turns, have all been a valuable lesson in navigating my career. I am not one that is good at directions (thanks we have GPS!) and get lost a lot, so trying to listen to the voice inside that continues to keep the focus on what is important is a true North Star. Creatives have that challenge in staying true to the love of creating. It is a vulnerable business and exposing one’s work to the public is not for the weary! I had a professor in Graduate school that said ‘I’m not sure you have enough good ideas”! With all that I have done, sometimes that negative voice still pops up for me. The nerve of him to say that. I went in to teaching, and all I had for my students were good ideas – haha!! From there, I created my own business because I had so many ideas that I needed to explore. I guess the result is, watch out for those negative voices and don’t give them power.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I create bright, whimsical art with bold color and lines in my paintings. It transfers well in to my greeting cards, where I do simple line and color with a bit of wit or sentiment attached.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Not sure
