Check Out Jacob Robbins’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Robbins

Hi Jacob, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started music production after my wife (girlfriend at the time) bought me Ableton 10 Suite for Christmas in 2019 and started producing music on New Year’s Day in 2020. I never looked back! Since then, I have grown a small following on SoundCloud and other various platforms that seem to appreciate the music I make.

Since about 2010, I have always loved electronic music with heavy bass frequencies, and I have gravitated towards sounds that are unique and exciting. I have attended various events focused on this sound over the years since 2013 an increasingly grew interested in creating my own sound. Since I started my music production journey, I have made significant growth as an artist and mainly learned how to hone my craft via trial and error (YouTube videos were super helpful as well!). Over the past few years as a DJ and producer, I have met a variety of different artists who share this love for unique sound and push me to continue honing my craft. The community that I have become a part of has inspired me significantly and I attribute a majority of my inspiration at this point in my production journey to the lifelong friends that I have made. I also have my wife to thank endlessly, of course.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Music production is an art and a science, and I did not start to understand that completely until about a year and a half or so into my production journey. The music I created during my first few years of production are a bit unrefined, but the spirit is there. Once you figure out that there are definitive ways to make music sound better, it is difficult to go back in time and rework old projects. I found myself frustrated with old projects and I had difficulty going back to finish things that I had started, often starting entirely new projects instead.

Getting your foot in the door to share your art at venues and clubs is a whole different ball game outside of music production, and it has its own challenges as well. That being said, I am playing a festival that I have been dreaming of playing (Big Fam) in the next week and my hard work has seemed to pay off.

Overall, the road has been pretty smooth, and I am more satisfied with my current production abilities than I have ever been!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
People have told me that I have my own unique sound. I am very inspired by old videogames and 8-bit melodies and this is a driving factor in my music. I like to think I specialize in sound engineering and sub-frequency manipulation. I like to make music that can sound pretty but heavy at the same time.

What might set me apart from others is my affinity for writing melodies in music and bass sound design. Everyone has a different approach when it comes to music production, and my approach may be a bit unorthodox, but it has gotten me to the place I am today.

Something I am proud of is the level of output with music production that I have achieved. I just released a track called “Restoration” on my most recent EP (July EP), and I wrote, mixed, and mastered the track in only an hour. It is one of my favorite tracks I have written to date and I am proud of what I have been able to achieve with short bursts of creative focus.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me at the end of the day is the artistry of production. When I hear bass music, or music in general, I like to listen to what sets an artist apart from others in terms of creative decision-making and sound. You can throw a rock in any general direction and hit a producer or DJ, but those who have cultivated their own unique sound are much harder to find.
