Check Out Horace Sheffield’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Horace Sheffield. 

Hi Horace, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born in a family that has engaged in social change for 2 generations before me and now four including my daughter. Being exposed to how the rank and file buttressed the labor and civil rights movements as a child help me understand how people can organize and change society. Consequently, I got involved in anti-Vietnam war activities, was elected to the Detroit Board of Education at the age of 21, and has continued, even as a pastor, to address the plight of the poor. 

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The line of progress is never straight, and the only time you experience friction is if you are moving. That’s a longer answer when the short one is no, it hasn’t been a smooth road. How you encounter and decide to overcome the same is an indication of your commitment to a cause and if it’s a calling or a casual engagement. Some the struggles were not properly accounting for the failure of those impacted to assist in their own betterment. Sometimes I’ve been more concerned about how people are being mistreated than they were. Learning to do what is right regardless of its difficulty is the most important struggle to overcome. 

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve written and performed plays, and in general tried to use drama as a means of motivating others to take action. I’m most proud of my collaboration with Yolanda King, the daughter of Martin Luther King, Jr., and Attallah Shabazz, the daughter of Malcolm X, that enabled us to reach hundreds of thousands of youth with messages concerning suicide and drugs. 

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
No question, persistence, and perseverance. Never giving up no matter what or who is an indescribable virtue.
